Second half goals seal Lewis & Clark's road loss

Box Score

McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- Kylie Carera's goal in the 32nd minute helped even the match, but Lewis & Clark allowed two second half scores minutes apart to fall to the Linfield Wildcats on Saturday afternoon.

The two second half goals followed an injury to Lewis & Clark freshman defender Mali PetersonWood. She attempted to head a ball, but drew contact, changing her trajectory and the ball hit off the top of her head. Play was stopped for approximately 15 minutes and PetersonWood was transferred to the hospital, accompanied by head coach Jim Tursi. She was later released.

"It was hard to recover without one of our vital players and our coach," said junior defender Mackenzie Cornell-Maier. "As hard as we tried, we lost energy."

Linfield forward Rachael Gernhart followed her shot off the crossbar and put it into the right side of the net in the 75th minute before using Jamie Mars' cross to score three minutes later. The pair of goals were her second and third of the year.

In the match, Lewis & Clark (6-3, 2-3 NWC) was outshot 19-10, although that included a 12-3 difference in the second half. The Pios took four fewer shots overall, 6-2, and had less corner kicks, 3-2.

Carera's tally came off of a deflected cross and was put into the far right post. It was her fourth goal this season, which is the most for the Pioneers. The goal capped off a half for the Pioneers in which they controlled possession primarily and, at one point, owned a 6-4 lead in shots taken.

To open the match, Linfield took four of the first five shots, but none of them were on goal against Lewis & Clark starting goalkeeper Kelley Koeppen (6-3).

Meanwhile Lewis & Clark's first four shots were on goal. Along with Karley Pate's fourth minute effort and Hannah Stoddard's in the 13th minute, Anna Thorndike put two in frame in the 20th and 21st minutes. Linfield's Sarah Bailey stopped all of them as part of the six saves she totaled for the afternoon.

Linfield (6-1-1, 3-1-1) scored first despite the Pios early match tempo, getting a 28th minute goal from Ashlee McFall from outside the 18-yard box. It was her first of the season.

The Wildcats had chances to score prior to putting in their second half scores, as Gernhart hit the post and the crossbar before scoring both. Linfield took seven shots in a span of 12 minutes after the 69th minute.

Pate and Thorndike took all three of Lewis & Clark's second half shots.

"We'll have to regroup and try to put things together tomorrow," said Cornell-Maier.

The Pios return home to face Willamette on Sunday at noon, seeking to avoid their second weekend of back-to-back losses in Northwest Conference play.
