Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers took four of the first six shots of the game, and ended up doubling up visiting Pacific Lutheran in total shots for the match, but the No. 20 Lutes used a two-goal lead to win 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.
Rochelle Jordan put in the deflection of Karley Pate's blocked shot in the 90th minute to get Lewis & Clark on the board. Jordan's third goal of the season came after Pacific Lutheran scored twice in the opening half, first on a Kelsey Hathaway tally in the third minute and then Taylor Lunde's in the 41st minute.
The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-6-1 in the Northwest Conference standings with 10 points, while PLU moves to 25 points on the season with an 8-1-1 conference mark.
"Disappointing results this weekend, but our team played really good defense and was unlucky a couple times," said Jordan after Sunday's match. "We had a lot of good opportunities to score."
In their 1-0 loss on Saturday, the Pioneers were outshot by Puget Sound 12-4. On Sunday, Lewis & Clark held a 16-8 advantage in shots, including putting seven shots on-goal against PLU goalkeeper Takara Mitsui, who entered the game leading the conference in save percentage.
In the second half alone, the Pios had a 12-3 advantage in shots.
The goal by Hathaway was put in from around the penalty spot off a Jamie Hoffman pass, her second of the season and Hoffman's fourth assist.
Megan Ratfield forced the first save by PLU in the seventh minute and Emily Thompson, who leads Lewis & Clark in goals this season, had a shot blocked in the 15th minute. Anna Thorndike's 19th minute try was saved by Mitsui before Pate sent one wide two minutes later.
Possession started to shift toward Pacific Lutheran in later stages of the half when Krista Morford missed wide in the 39th minute.
Lunde's goal happened two minutes later when she turned to score from six yards out after a deflection put the ball in front of the net. The goal was the seventh of Lunde's season, tying her with teammate Machaela Gaddy and Linfield's Emma Vukic for the most in the NWC. She took two shots in the game, missing wide in the 42nd minute.
Lewis & Clark started the second half as quickly as it did in the first, shooting the first six tries of the half. Carera missed high and had one blocked while Thorndike went high and twiced forced a Mitsui save between the 50th and 62nd minutes. Thorndike had a third try of the half stopped by Mitsui in the 69th minute as well, finishing with a game-high six shots, four of which were on-goal.
At that point, Lewis & Clark had outshot the Lutes 10-5, but were trailing 2-0. Despite shots from Taylor Hudson, Thorndike and Thompson, the Pios still trailed by two entering the 90th minute. With less than 30 seconds to play, Carera had a shot blocked, followed by Pate's blocked try before Jordan put in the Pios' only score.
"That was some really good work from Pate," said Jordan. "Had she not made that run and got in the way of the keeper, I would have never been lucky enough to be there and score it. It was a huge effort from multiple people and I'm happy we could put away one against that team."
Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Sandra Alvarenga lost her second straight match despite only facing three shots. She made one save before Kelley Koeppen played the second half.
The Pioneers close out the season with five of the final six games on the road, starting next Saturday at George Fox. Earlier this season, Lewis & Clark won 4-3 over the Bruins in the highest-scoring game the Pios have played this season.
