Lewis & Clark allows one goal in loss to No. 24 Puget Sound

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A 38th minute goal by Jordyn McLuen was one of a combined four shots on-goal in the entire game, as Lewis & Clark lost a home match 1-0 against Puget Sound on Saturday at Griswold Stadium.

Off a corner kick, Cassie Winter received a short pass and sent in a cross from the top right of the 18-yard box that McLuen headed into the goal from the six-yard area past Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Sandra Alvarenga for the Puget Sound score. It was McLuen's first goal of the season.

"We came out really strong and frustrated UPS," said senior Karley Pate after the match. "We need to keep up the energy tomorrow. We played really well today, we just need to put away our chances tomorrow and then not have any defensive breakdowns."

Lewis & Clark plays Pacific Lutheran, which is ranked No. 20 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, on Sunday at noon.

After scoring three goals in the Pioneers' 4-0 win over Whitworth last Saturday, senior Emily Thompson had a great chance in the sixth minute, but missed wide. Lewis & Clark only produced four shots for the entire match, three of which occurred in the first half.

In addition to her first shot, Thompson also forced a save by Puget Sound's Lauren Thomas with a header off a Megan Ratfield corner in the 24th minute. Senior Kylie Carera also forced a save in the 32nd minute.

The Pios wouldn't have another shot-on-goal the rest of the game, and only one more shot overall. It came in the 56th minute when Thompson was blocked.

Grayson Williams-Krebs took a shot in the 36th minute that was stopped by Alvarenga. The Loggers had no shots in-frame in the second half. Contrastly, UPS put nine shots on-goal in a 4-0 win in Tacoma last month.

Defender Isobel Fikso was issued a yellow card in the 71st minute. Both teams had four fouls.

Corner kicks were nearly even with the Loggers holding a 5-4 advantage.

Lewis & Clark now sits in sixth place in the Northwest Conference with 10 points so far this season. Puget Sound is three points behind first place Pacific Lutheran, followed by Willamette, Linfield and Pacific. The final two on that list are Lewis & Clark's opponents next weekend when the Pios start a stretch of five of six games on the road.
