Lewis & Clark draws in first OT match of season

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Held to just one shot in the opening 45 minutes, the Lewis & Clark offense livened up in the second half, getting an Anna Thorndike goal to even the match in the 80th minute as the Pioneers finished in a 1-1 draw with the Whitman Missionaries on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium.

Thorndike redirected a long diagonal ball from Hannah Stoddard into the net to score her fourth goal of the season. The tally followed Whitman's goal in the 68th minute, scored by Lena de Guzman, her second of the season. The junior put the only ball in past Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Sandra Alvarenga, scoring from 25 yards out into the top right corner of the net.

"The ball came out on a knockout and I just happened to be there, and saw [Thorndike]," said Stoddard about the Pios' goal. "It was kind of a lucky ball, but I just whipped it into her and she got the head on it."

The score was just the second shot that Lewis & Clark had put on goal in the game, with the first not coming until the 56th minute when Megan Ratfield forced a save by Whitman's Haley Case (0-5-3).

Whitman (1-8-3; 1-4-3 NWC) owned possession in the first half, outshooting the Pioneers 5-1, including a 4-0 edge on attempts in-frame. The Missionaries also took four corner kicks to Lewis & Clark's one.

The match evened out by the end of the two overtimes, with Lewis & Clark winning total shots 13-12 despite trailing in corner kicks for the match 6-2.

Sunday's contest had a different tone to it than Lewis & Clark's 4-0 win over Whitworth the day before when the Pios outshot their opponent 10-3 in the first half.

"On Saturday, we came out off two losses and we had a lot of fire," said Stoddard. "In the first half today, we weren't able to carry that through, but in the second half, our defense pushed up a lot and helped close that gap so we were more proactive, and that helped us on offense."

'It was an important win Saturday just to get off two bad losses and the team needed to just feel good about themselves," said head coach Jim Tursi after Sunday's match. "Today was a bad match-up for us. Whitman plays a lot of movement and we didn't pick up on that very wel. We struggled with them today."

Although the Pioneers started the second half with a flurry of shots - Emily Thompson had one blocked, Karly Pate missed high and Ratfield had one stopped by Case and another blocked - Lewis & Clark (7-4-1; 3-4-1) had its best chance of the match when Thorndike missed off the crossbar in the 64th minute.

Whitman was unphased, however, as de Guzman scored four minutes later. Following Thorndike's goal, Alvarenga (1-0-1) stopped a point-blank shot by Clara Merlino in the 86th minute. Case replied with a diving stop of her own on a Thompson shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. Thompson was coming off her career-high three goal performance on Saturday against Whitworth.

Thorndike almost gave the Pios the win in regulation, putting a redirect into net in the 90th minute, but the Pioneers were offside and the match moved to overtime.

The Missionaries put out the first shot in overtime when Brianna Brown's attempt was saved by Alvarenga in the 96th minute. Pate and Thompson both missed wide on Lewis & Clark's two first overtime attempts.

After Whitman's Alissa Soo missed wide three minutes into the second overtime, Danielle Wieck used her heel to put the ball past Alvarenga, but the Missionaries were called offside and the game ended in the 1-1 draw.

"It was probably a deserved tie today," said Tursi. "Both teams had chances to score in the end. It was fitting for today's result. We'll adjust to them next time."

Now the Pioneers turn their attention to the second half of the Northwest Conference schedule, which starts on Saturday when 13-time NWC defending champion Puget Sound visits Griswold Stadium. The Loggers defeated Lewis & Clark 4-0 on Sept. 19 when Puget Sound hosted the Pioneers.

"We're looking one game at a time from now on and we're focusing just on that first game and winning that game," said Stoddard. "Next week, Saturday, that's all we're focusing on now."

After the Puget Sound match, the Pios only have two home contests remaining out of their final seven games. They play Pacific Lutheran on Oct. 18 and Linfield on Oct. 31 in Portland.
