Three Goals Propel Women's Soccer Past Whittier

Box Score

WHITTIER, Calif. - Three goals helped the Lewis & Clark women's soccer team leave California with a win over Whittier on Sunday. The Pioneers, who played through temperatures that exceeded 100 degrees for the second straight day, defeated the Poets 3-1.

The win moves the Pioneers to 2-1-1 on the season, while the Poets slip to 1-3-1.

The Pioneers Kylie Carera was the first player to put pressure on either goalkeeper, firing a shot on target at Alexi Cruz in the 11th minute. The Poets reciprocated four minutes later with an attempt on goal, but were shut down by Geena Fong

Freshman Annelise Coxeff put the Pioneers on top in the 30th minute with her first goal of the season. Rochelle Jordan got the play going, playing the ball through the Whittier backline where she found Coxeff in the box earning the Pioneers a 1-0 advantage.

Whittier came out of the half ready to go, rattling off four consecutive corners with the final one resulting in a goal.

With the contest now tied at one all, the Pioneers settled down and found their offense, putting all the pressure on the Poets. Lewis & Clark began firing several shots on goal, including one by Emily Thompson in the 68th minute that bounced off the post. Fortunately for Thompson and the Pioneers the ball rebounded back to the junior forward who didn't miss the second time around.

The Pioneers weren't done scoring this time with Coxeff repaying Jordan. The play began with a solid shot from Karley Pate that Cruz managed to save but knock out of bounds. Megan Ratfield stepped up to take the corner kick which was tracked down by Coxeff. The freshman then crossed it back into the box to Jordan who headed it in the back of the net.

Coxeff led the Pioneers in shots with four, two of which were on goal, while Carera and Jordan each had three. Fong faced just five shot during the contest, making four saves in 90 minutes of action for her second complete game win of the season.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. when they host Willamette in the teams Northwest Conference opener.
