PORTLAND, Ore- The Lewis & Clark softball team dropped two games to Whitworth Sunday losing game one 6-0 and a heartbreaking second game 10-9. The Pioneers move to 11-24 overall and 7-19 in conference play, while the Pirates move to 26-14 overall with an 18-10 conference record.
Game One:
The Pirates scored in the first inning when Julia Johnson hit a two run homer to center field. Another homer in the fourth by Kayla Batastini added two more runs. They didn't stop there as they scored two more runs in the fourth taking their total to six.
The Pioneers finished with five hits, but couldn't put them together to cross the plate as the Pirates use only two innings to win 6-0.
The hits were spread around the team as Haley Robinson, Hannah Dal Pra, Jenai Rojo, Caitlin Basilio, and Kylee Kennel each finished with one hit.
Madison Hollenbeck (7-13) takes the loss pitching seven innings allowing six runs on ten hits while walking three and striking out four. Madi Perez (13-5) takes the shut out for the Pirates pitching seven innings allowing five hits while walking two and striking out one.
Game Two:
The Pioneers came out swinging in the first inning as their bats woke up scoring three runs. Robinson led the inning off with a single but as the throw went into the dugout she took second base. On a Dal Pra ground out, Robinson advanced to third. Hollenbeck then singled to center to score Robinson for the first run of the inning. Rojo then stepped to the plate cranking a homer to left center to score two runs and take the Pioneer lead to three.
The Pirates came right back scoring six runs in the second inning. Only using three hits, and four walks to their advantage.
Maddie Lee led the bottom of the second off for the Pioneers hitting a single up the middle and advancing to second on a passed ball. Basilio sacrifice bunted Lee over to third for Kelsey Buck who singled down the left field line scoring Lee.
Batastini singled up the middle for the Pirates scoring a walk the Pioneers put on base to take the lead 7-4.
Rojo began inning three with a walk and advanced to second on an error by the second baseman, which put Lindsay Yearman on base. Lee sacrifice bunted both runners over for Basilio who singled through the left side scoring Rojo.
A double play got the Pioneers out of the top of the fourth to score three runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Hollenbeck reached on an error and advanced to second on a Rojo walk. Yearman singled through the right side loading the bases for Lee. Hitting a single in the gap in right field, Lee cleared the bases but was caught in a pickle between second and third putting the Pioneers in the lead 8-7.
Buck doubled to left field in the fifth and scored on a Tiana Rosario single to center field. The Pioneers got another double play in the top of the sixth, their third on the day, to keep the lead 9-7.
The Pirates just wouldn't go away, as a walk to begin the inning and three hits scored three runs to put them in the lead 10-9. The Pioneers threatened in the ninth with back-to-back singles but couldn't push a run across losing 10-9.
The Pioneers finished with fourteen hits led by Robinson and Buck who both finished with three, Lee and Basilio finished with two, while Rosario, Hollenbeck, Rojo, and Yearman each finished with one, respectively.
Kalin Rooney (2-4) takes the loss on the mound for the Pioneers pitching five and one third innings allowing four runs on six hits, while walking four and striking out two. Hallie Knife took the start for the Pioneers pitching one and two third innings allowing six runs on three hits, while walking four and striking out one. Madi Perez (14-5) takes the win for the Pirates again as she pitched the last three innings allowing one run on four hits while striking out one. Makayla Lefever started on the mound giving up four runs on seven hits in just one inning. Taylor Gilbert also saw time pitching three innings allowing four runs on three hits and walking two.
The Pioneers play in their final games of the season Monday April 14 for a make-up double-header against Willamette at Huston Sports Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
