HAPPY VALLEY, Ore- The Lewis & Clark softball team played George Fox in make up games from March 8 Thursday at Hoodview Park, losing the first game 1-8 and the second 4-10. The Pioneers move to 6-16 overall with a 2-11 conference record while the Bruins move to 18-6 overall with a 7-5 conference record.

Game One:

The Bruins got off to a quick start in game one scoring four runs in the first inning using four hits and an error.  Two singles by Felicia Chavez and Megan Furtado put runners on first and second, followed by two outs. What should have been the third out was a dropped fly error in the outfield that scored Chavez and advanced Furtado to third. A walk loaded the bases for Kat Hylton who doubled to left center scoring two runners. Another single and the fourth run of the inning scored.

The bottom of the third brought another run for the Bruins when Hollenbeck walked a batter followed by a double to center field.

Helping herself out, Hollenbeck scored the loan run of the game for the Pioneers when she hit a home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning.

Hylton hit a home run in the fifth to give the Bruins a 6-1 lead. The sixth inning brought two more runs on two hits and an error to make the score 8-1. Caitlin Basilio and Ashely Bolick tried to get a rally started in the seventh with back-to-back singles with two outs, but the fire was put out and the end for the Pioneers who couldn't score any more runs.

Hollenbeck (5-9) takes the loss for the Pioneers pitching six innings giving up eight runs on ten hits, while walking five and striking out two. Erin Hento (8-4) takes the win for the Bruins pitching six innings giving up one run on four hits, while walking two and striking out seven. Amanda Woods also saw some time on the mound for the Bruins pitching inning seven giving up two hits, while striking out one.

Game Two:

Picking up where they left off, the Bruins scored eight runs in the first inning of game two using four hits, one error, one walk and two hit by pitches. Chavez hit the inning clincher with a grand slam that scored the final four runs of the inning.

Amanda Rabith got things started for the Pioneers with a single to start the second inning. After a Basilio fielders' choice, Rabith was out at second, but Basilio soon advanced on a wild pitch. Kalin Rooney then doubled to left center scoring the Pioneers first run of the game.

The Bruins tallied two more in the second inning using one hit putting the score at 10-1.

The Pioneers weren't going to give up that easily as they scored two runs in the top of the fifth. Haley Robinson singled to shortstop to begin the inning and advanced to second on a Hannah Dal Pra single up the middle. Hollenbeck hit a fielders' choice that put her on first and Dal Pra out at second while Robinson advanced to third. Putting herself in scoring position Hollenbeck stole second, as Kylee Kennel singled to center field scoring both runners.

Basilio began the sixth inning with a walk, stole second base, and scored on a single hit by Robinson to right field. It was all the Pioneers could muster as the final score read 4-10.

Robinson finished the game with three hits leading the Pioneers, Dal Pra and Kennel each finished with two, while Hollenbeck, Yearman, Rabith, and Rooney each finished with one.

Hallie Knife (0-5) takes the loss for the Pioneers pitching two thirds of an inning giving up eight runs on four hits, while walking one. Rooney pitched five and one third innings giving up two runs on two hits while walking four and striking out two. Allyssa DenDekker (6-2) takes the win for the Bruins pitching a complete game giving up four runs on eleven hits, while walking one and striking out three.

The Pioneers continue Northwest Conference play March 29 against Pacific at Huston Sports Complex for a double-header beginning at noon.
