CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Lewis & Clark softball team opened the 2014 season on Thursday afternoon on the road against Pomona-Pitzer, picking up a 7-1 victory off the momentum of a five-run seventh inning.
The Pioneers first run came in the first inning after Haley Robinson reached first on an error, stole second base, and was moved to third off a ground ball by Jenai Rojo. Hannah Dal Pra then singled to centerfield hitting in Robinson.
It was quiet for both teams until the fifth inning when Robinson scored again on a wild pitch after reaching base on a walk. The Sagehens scored their only run in the fifth inning off two hits, a single by Lauren Boden to center scored Ashley Morello who reached on a double to left field.
The Pioneers bats came alive in the seventh inning scoring five runs. Dal Pra led off the seventh inning singling to center, followed by Caitlin Basilio who reached first after being hit by a pitch. Laying down a bunt to reach first, Madison Hollenbeck loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Robinson stepped to the plate and cranked a double to center knocking in three runs. Tiana Rosario singled to center advancing Robinson to third who then scored the seventh run on a wild pitch.
The Pioneers finished the game with 11 hits led by Robinson, Rosario, Dal Pra and Lindsay Yearman who all finshed with two hits. Lauren Lovato, Ashley Bolick, and Hollenbeck both finished with one hit, respectively.
Hollenbeck got the complete game win for the Pioneers finishing the game with two strikeouts, and three walks, while giving up six hits, and only one run.
The Pioneers play tomorrow, February 7th, on the road against La Sierra for a double header at 12pm and 2pm.
