Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's soccer team rolled past the George Fox Bruins on Sunday afternoon, earning a 3-1 Northwest Conference win at Griswold Stadium.
The win was the Pioneers second of the weekend, moving them to 6-2-2 on the season and 4-1-1 in conference play. The Bruins fall to 0-7-3 overall and 0-5-1 in conference.
Lewis & Clark wasted no time getting on the board, netting their first goal of the game in the ninth minute. Junior Anna Thorndike took the ball from the left side and crossed a perfectly placed ball into the center of the box, where Marissa Sandgren simply chipped it over the Bruin keeper.
The Pioneers had plenty of chances in the first half, outshooting the Bruins 11-2, while holding a 4-0 advantage in corners. Despite their clear dominance, the Pioneers would go into the half holding a 1-0 lead.
Annelise Coxeff made it 2-0 Lewis & Clark right out of the gate in the second half. The play started down the flank, where the Pioneers found success penetrating the Bruin defense all day, with a cross into the middle of the 18-yard box by Emily Thompson. The Thompson pass fell to Coxeff's feet where she swiftly roofed it.
The Bruins cut the Pioneer lead in half in the 70th minute off a free kick.
Lewis & Clark continued to keep George Fox on their heels over the final 20 minutes of play. After a take away by the Pioneer defense, the Pios quickly countered with a series of give and go's by Thompson and Raquel McNeff that led to the teams final goal of the game. The duo took the ball past midfield, all the way down the right side of the Bruins 18-yard box to the touchline. Once they reached the end line McNeff passed it to Thompson, who one-timed it into the penalty area. The cross made its way to the head of Kylie Carera and into the Bruin net.
The Pioneers goalkeeper was virtually unchallenged, with Geena Fong picking up her fifth complete game victory of the season. Coxeff led the Pios in shots with five, while Megan Ratfield had four shots.
Lewis & Clark returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 12 p.m. when they host Puget Sound.
