TACOMA, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark women's basketball team concluded the opening weekend of Northwest Conference action at Pacific Lutheran on Saturday. The Lutes narrowly pulled out the victory, winning 67-64.
The loss moves the Pioneers to 6-5 on the season and 1-1 in NWC play. The Lutes improve to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Freshman Ayisat Afolabi led the Pioneers with a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds. The freshman guard ended the night 8-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the free-throw line. Afolabi also led the all players in steals, finishing the night with four.
Seniors Katie Anderson and Tayler Wang each knocked down 14 points for the Pioneers. Like Afolabi, Anderson came up with a game-high four steals.
Samantha Potter ended the evening with a game-high 20 points for Pacific Lutheran, while also collecting a game-high 12 rebounds.
The first half was a sluggish one with the two sides going into halftime with the Lutes leading 25-19.
After falling behind by 15 in the start of the second half the Pioneers began to click on all cylinders, tying the game at 61-61 with 1:49 remaining on a Casey Zinn three pointer. Despite several good attempts in the final minute by the Pioneers, the Lutes managed to hang on by a thread, pulling out the win.
Lewis & Clark returns home for its next contest, hosting the George Fox Bruins on Friday, Jan. 10 at 6 p.m.
