TACOMA, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark women's soccer team lost to the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes on Saturday in Northwest Conference action. The Lutes scored the game winner in the fifth minute of the second overtime to win 2-1.
The Pioneers and the Lutes played with equal strength for the first half of regulation with five shots each. Andi Glaeser started the game with a quick shot in the first minute of play that was saved by the Lute's keeper. Maddie Harper and Natalie Levy also took shots trying to put Lewis & Clark on the board.
Pacific Lutheran dominated the second half of competition with eight shots to Lewis & Clark's two. The Lutes first goal of the night came in the 63rd minute with a shot by Sarah Gamache, assisted by Blake Warner.
With the score 1-0, the Pioneers played up their defensive strengths until a breakout shot by Pioneer Glaeser found the back of the net, tying the game 1-1 and bringing L&C to their second overtime game of the season and first in NWC play.
The first overtime passed with no shots from the Pioneers but three consecutive saves from Lewis & Clark keeper Geena Fong.
Five minutes into the seocond overtime a header from Pacific Lutheran's Alex Murray, assisted by Blake Warner scored from a left side cross, earning the Lutes their victory 2-1.
"The girls put up a good fight and never backed down, " said Coach Chase Jordan. "We just didn't get the results we were looking for at the beginning of the game."
The Pioneers fall to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The Lutes improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference.
Lewis & Clark returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. when they take on the Willamette Bearcats in Salem, Ore.
