SPOKANE, Wash. - The Lewis & Clark women's soccer team fell to the Whitworth Pirates 3-2 in overtime Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers fall to 2-14-2 on the season and 1-12-1 in conference play. The Pirates improve to 8-5-4 overall and 8-3-4 in the NWC.
Play started off slow between the Pirates and the Pioneers in the first half, exchanging shots from both sides until the 35th minute. With a cross from the middle, four yards out Whitworth's Katrin Grant, assisted by Anisa Barbar put the Pirates first point on the board, ending the first half 1-0.
The Pioneers did not hesitate to respond early in the second half with a right side shot from Raquel McNeff, her first goal of the season. Sarah Breninger followed eight minutes later with a goal of her own right over the head of the Whitworth keeper.
Not to be left behind the Pirates responded with their second goal to tie up the game, with a right side shot from Carly Schilperoort. Whitworth scrambled in the last minutes of the second half to take the game but were unsuccessful.
Ending regulation tied at 2-2, the Pioneers entered their sixth overtime match of the season.
Within the first minute of overtime play, Whitworth's MacKenzie Grow sent the ball right under the cross bar into into the goal, ending the game at 3-2.
McNeff, Breninger and Gina Watkins each took shots for the Pioneers while Geena Fong earned five saves.
Lewis & Clark is back on the field at home, Wednesday Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
