PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's soccer team took down the Whitman Missionaries 2-0 on a rain soaked Sunday afternoon in a Northwest Conference match.
The win is the first Northwest Conference win of the season for Lewis & Clark, who improve to 2-6-2 on the season and 1-4-1 in the NWC. The Missionaries slip to 4-6 on the year and 3-4 in conference play.
Whitman held the majority of possession during the game, while outshooting the Pioneers a staggering 14-5. The Missionaries had several looks at goal during the first half but were unable to put one past starting goalkeeper Geena Fong.
The second half was a tighter battle between the two sides with Whitman holding a slim 6-4 advantage in shots.
Lewis & Clark was able to capitalize in the 51st minute on a Whitman handball in the penalty box on a Emilia Emmetti corner kick. The handball setup a Pioneer penalty kick that was taken and made by Emmetti.
Whitman put on the pressure following the Pioneer goal, playing very aggressive both physically and attacking wise. The Missionaries aggressiveness backfired however, when Sarah Breninger was able to collect the ball just ahead of midfield and beat the keeper to the ball from 31-yards out. After slipping past the keeper, Breninger unleashed a well placed ball from around 20-yards out into the far post netting for the Pioneers second goal.
Emmetti led the Pioneers in shots with two, while Breninger, Natalie Levy and Raquel McNeff each had one.
Amy Hasson led the Missionaries in shots with six.
Fong and Elise Delgado split time in net with Delgado playing the entire second half.
Lewis & Clark returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 12 p.m. when they take on the George Fox Bruins on the road.
