PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark women's
basketball team extended its win streak to four games, defeating
the Pacific Boxers 68-52 on Saturday night in a Northwest
Conference contest at the Pamplin Sports Complex.
The win helps the Pios remain two games ahead of the Whitworth
Pirates in the NWC standings, as the Pios improve to 10-4 in
conference play (3rd place) and 16-7 overall. The Boxers fall to
6-15 on the season and 3-11 in NWC play.
The Boxers opened the game on top 2-0, before a jumper by Talerra
Rich with 19:12 on the clock tied things at 2-2. The Pios would
take the momentum and run up an eight point, 16-8, advantage with
11:34 remaining in the half with another Rich jumper with the
assist coming from Kristina Williams. Kayla Akers pulled the Boxers
within two with 4:37 remaining, hitting a three-pointer that cut
the score to 24-22. The Pacific basket sparked something in the
Pioneers, who closed out the half on a 13-5 run, taking a 10-point,
37-27, advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Pios extended their lead to 12 points,
39-27, on a Megan Spence jumper. The Boxers countered with a 15-3
of their own that pulled them within one point of the Pios with
14:57 remaining in the contest. Rochell Reeves-Howe led the charge
for the Boxers, scoring six points during the rally, while coming
up with the rebound that lead to Mallory Goldammer's
three-pointer. The Pios ramped up their offense, seeing the Boxers
run, and raising them a 13-0 run, allowing the Pios to pull ahead
54-42 with 8:50 on the clock. Christina Herring handed the Pioneers
their largest lead of the game with 34-seconds remaining, hitting
one of her two free throws, putting her team up 68-50. The Boxers
earned a basket back courtesy of Kayla Akers with four seconds
remaining to end the game 68-52.
Christina Herring led all players in points with 21, while dishing
out a game-high nine assists and coming down with seven boards.
Rich ended her career at the Pamplin Sports Complex with her first
double-double of the season, putting up 11 points and coming down
with 10 rebounds. Megan Spence also finished with 11 points, while
Williams chipped in 10.
Erica Schultz and Akers led the Boxers with 13 points each, while
Reeves-Howe ended the night with 12 points.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. as they
travel to George Fox.
