BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – It was an unfortunate
day for the Lewis & Clark women's soccer team who could not
catch a break against the Whitman Missionaries on Friday afternoon
at Griswold Stadium. The Pioneers battled the Missionaries through
two-overtime periods to end the contest in a 2-2 deadlock.
The Pioneers are now 3-12-4 on the season and 1-12-2 in
Northwest Conference action with one game remaining. The
Missionaries concluded their season with a 6-11-2 overall record
and 4-10-2 NWC record.
Senior Catherine Kitts put the Pioneers up early with an
unassisted goal just 40 seconds into the contest. The goal is the
fastest ever scored by a Pioneer. Whitman pulled even later in the
half with a penalty kick with 35:42 on the clock.
The Pioneers recaptured the lead two minutes later with a strike
from freshman Austyn Byassee. Kitts helped bring the play about,
chasing down a ball in the box, which was kicked away by the
Whitman keeper directly to Byassee.
The Missionaries managed to convert another penalty kick to pull
even once more. This time the penalty came with 19 minutes
remaining in the second half.
Lewis & Clark continued to push forward throughout the
remainder of the regulation period, coming up unlucky on a shot
that pinged off the crossbar.
The first overtime period saw Whitman come out with a quick
shot, but the Pioneers would regain the momentum and continue to
fire on goal. The second overtime period was much the same, with
the Pioneers continuing to unleash shot after shot. The crossbar
proved to be the Missionaries friend again, this time in the second
overtime, with a Natalie Levy shot ricocheting off the bar.
The Pioneers ended the contest with a 25-13 advantage in shots
and 8-2 lead in corner kicks. Elise Delgado came up with four saves
for the Pioneers.
The Pios return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. when
they host the Whitworth Pirates on Senior Day.
