BOX SCORE
PORTLAND, Ore. – A goal in the opening
minutes of the second overtime period by Cori Jo Young, on Saturday
afternoon at Griswold Stadium sent the George Fox Bruins home with
a 2-1 victory. The Bruins improve to 3-4-2 on the season and 2-3 in
Northwest Conference action. Lewis & Clark falls to 2-5-2
overall and 0-5 in NWC play.
Senior Aly Robinson put the Pioneers on the board first on a
well placed ball by Lexi Bolton. Bolt fed the ball through the
Bruin defense, finding Robinson on the other end with 27:29 to play
in the first half. Robinson chipped the keeper to put the Pios up
1-0 in their homecoming contest.
George Fox continued to put the pressure on throughout the half,
nearly finding the equalizer with 8:44 remaining. With just two
minutes left in the first half of action, Young found her way
through traffic, shooting the ball into the bottom left corner of
the net to tie the contest as it headed to halftime.
The second half of action mostly belonged to the Bruins who held
the majority of the possession. Melanie Gaither nearly put the
Bruins up 2-1 with 22:40 on the clock, splitting the Pioneer
defense and making a cut to the right in an attempt to beat the
Pioneers goalkeeper Elise Delgado. Delgado was able to shut Gaither
down with a quick move to the right.
Sophomore Katrina Weisbecker had a chance to put the Pioneers on
top again, heading the ball into the side netting off of a
perfectly placed corner kick. The Pios had another opportunity with
10 minutes remaining in regulation on a breakaway from Andi
Gleaser, who tried to chip the ball over the Bruin goalkeeper.
Unfortunately the ball sailed out of bounds rather than into the
net.
Just minutes later it looked as though the Bruins were going to
get the upper hand, when Gaither put the ball into the net with six
minutes in regulation. The goal was called off though as the
sideline official waived the Bruins offsides.
The two sides went through the first overtime with neither team
able to earn a strong advantage over the other. George Fox was able
seal the deal in the second overtime on Young's second goal
of the day.
The Bruins outshot the Pioneers 31-12, while having a 7-1
advantage in corners.
The Pioneers return to the field on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 12 p.m. as
they host Pacific (Ore.).
