PORTLAND, Ore. – The Lewis & Clark
Athletics Department, in conjunction with the Student-Athlete
Advisory Committee (SAAC), were able to raise over $1,000 to donate
to the Haiti Relief Fun between the Northwest Conference basketball
games hosted by the Pioneers this weekend. Tonight the department
raised money as the women's basketball team fell 79-49 to the
Puget Sound Loggers in the Pamplin Sports Complex in their PAC(K)
Pamplin game.
The Pioneers now sit in third place in the conference with a 12-5
overall record and 6-2 NWC record, while the Loggers now rank
second in the conference with a 15-2 record and 7-1 conference
standing.
The two sides exchanged baskets early in the contest, before the
Loggers went on an 8-0 run to take a seven-point (13-6) advantage
with 14 minutes left in the half. Puget Sound continued to push the
tempo, much to the Pioneers dismay, wracking up a double-digit lead
with 8:43 left in the half on a three-pointer from Kelsey McKinnis
to put the Loggers up 20-8. The Pioneers would pick up a basket
here and there throughout the remainder of the half, but could not
stop the Logger offense who took a 36-18 lead into the locker
room.
The Pios tried to fight their way back into the game in the second
half of action, but it was all Loggers throughout the period,
earning Puget Sound the 74-49 victory.
The Pioneers received a team-high 12 points from Spence, who also
chipped in seven rebounds. Both Kristina Williams and Margaret
Dowling finished the night with nine points, while both collecting
six boards.
Claire Ely led the way for the Loggers with a game-high 23 points,
while Jocelyn Riordan put up 20 points and McKinnis added 14.
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday, Jan. 29 when they
return to the road to face the Whitman Missionaries for the second
time this season, with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
