PORTLAND, Ore. - The Linfield Wildcats scored twice
in the second half to hold off the Lewis & Clark Pioneers 2-1
on Sunday afternoon at Griswold Stadium. The Pioneers fall to 2-3-3
on the season and 1-3 in the Northwest Conference, while the
Wildcats improve to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in conference.
Junior Katie Browning put the Pios up 1-0 in the 30th minute of
action, after beating the Linfield defense, leaving her one-on-one
with goalkeeper Kelsey Hasselblad. Browning calmly took a couple
touches in the six-yard box before slotting the ball past
Hasselblad.
Three minutes into the second half a Lewis & Clark foul in the
box created a penalty kick opportunity for the Wildcats. Sara Blake
stepped up to the ball for Linfield and fired a shot to the lower
right side of the goal but was unable to slip it past Elise
Delgado. The Pioneer goalkeeper blocked the ball from going in but
was unable to handle it, allowing Blake to follow her shot and send
the rebound into the net, tying the game 1-1.
Linfield put in their game winning goal moments later, in the form
of MacKenzie Doty. In the 56th minute Doty took a feed from one of
her teammates before weaving her way through the Pioneer defense.
Doty then chipped the ball over Delgado from 10-yards out to push
the lead to 2-1.
The Pioneers finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots, while both
teams had a corner kick. Delgado made three shots on the afternoon,
while Hasselblad made four.
Lewis & Clark returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 3 when
they head to Newberg, Ore. to face NWC rival George Fox at 12 p.m.
