PORTLAND, Ore. – No. 2 Puget Sound's
Jenny Moore scored once in the first 10 minutes of the game and
again right before the half as the Loggers held off the Lewis &
Clark women's soccer team 5-0 on Sunday afternoon. The
Loggers five goals officially end the Pioneers scoreless streak
that has lasted five games. The Pioneers fall to 2-1-3 on the
season and 1-1 in the Northwest Conference, while the Loggers
remain undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 NWC).
The Loggers found the net moments later, this time on a soft foul
at the top of the 18-yard box, which resulted in a penalty kick.
Mikaela Freeman stepped up to take the shot, sending the ball left
while Pioneer goalkeeper Elise Delgado went right.
In the 25th minute, Moore took a feed into the box before drawing
out the Pioneer defense. Moore buried the shot from six
–yards out to push the lead to 3-0. The first half continued
to belong to the Loggers, who found the net for the fourth time in
the 38th minute on an unassisted goal by Janece Levien. The goal is
Levien's sixth of the season.
The Pioneer offense came alive in the second half of action, after
not producing a shot in the first. The two sides battled up and
down the field for a majority of the half before the Loggers snuck
in their fifth and final goal of the game.
After a nice feed from Theresa Henle, Melissa Abellanida was able
to get around the Pio defense and get a clear look at goal. The
midfielder then shot the ball over the keeper.
The Pioneers best scoring chance came in the 59th minute on a shot
by Gillian Sullivan-Bing that was met by a Puget Sound
defender.
The Loggers finished with a 24-5 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge
in corners. Delgado made eight saves for the Pios.
Lewis & Clark return to the field on Sept. 26 when they hit to
road to face NWC member Willamette. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
