PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshmen Katrina Weisbecker and
Katie Cabuling tallied goals as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers
defeated the Pacific Lutheran Lutes 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in
Northwest Conference soccer action. The Pioneers (2-0-3, 1-0 NWC)
continue to have the best season in program history having yet to
give up a goal, despite being picked to finish 9th in the NWC
Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
The Pioneers put together a well-rounded assault on the Lutes,
stringing together several one touch passes into space. The Pios
outshot the Lutes 11-7, while having one corner kick to the Lutes
zero. Pacific Lutheran goalkeeper Lauren Chambard made five saves
in the contest.
Weisbecker tallied the first score in the 18th minute after running
onto a perfect slot pass into the left side of the penalty box from
sophomore Natalie Stratton. Weisbecker took one touch, drawing the
PLU defense to her, before chipping the ball over the on rushing
PLU keeper.
Lewis & Clark finally scored what proved to be the game-winning
goal on a set piece in the 39th minute. Cabuling took the free kick
from about 12 yards out and straight on frame. Her attempt found
the right side of the goal.
Pacific Lutheran picked up the intensity in the second half but was
unable to capitalize despite a couple of good chances. The Lutes
nearly snuck one into the upper netting, but Pioneer goalkeeper
Elise Delgado made a huge stop to keep the game in L&C's
favor.
Weisbecker almost put the Pioneers up 3-0 in the 64th minute,
beating three PLU defenders leaving Chambard the only thing
standing between her and the goal. Weisbecker caught Chambard off
her line and fired a shot to the lower left side of the goal, but
watched it miss the goal by inches.
Delgado made four saves on the day, recording her fifth straight
shutout in as many games.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Griswold
Stadium when they host Puget Sound at 12 p.m, in another NWC
match-up. The game will be broadcast live on the Pioneer
Athletics Channel.
