PORTLAND, Ore. – It was a long night for
the Lewis & Clark women's soccer team, who battled
cross-town opponent Warner Pacific to a 0-0 double overtime tie.
The Pioneers received solid performances from the rookies, with
freshman goalkeeper Elise Delgado picking up the complete game
shutout. Delgado ended the game with five saves, while watching 16
shots sail her way.
Both teams kept the first half of action close, with the Knights
edging the Pioneers in shots 3-1, while also picking up one corner
kick. The Pioneers lone first half shot came from freshman Katie
Cabuling in the 17th minute of action, but was denied by the
Knight's goalkeeper.
Warner Pacific came out firing in the second half of action,
posting two quick shots at the beginning of the period. The
Pioneers tried their go at goal in the 88th minute, with Katie
Browning taking a shot that found its way to Warner Pacific
goalkeeper Lacey Golden. The Knights tried to capitalize shortly
after with a quick counter attack, but were unable to put the ball
on frame. Junior transfer Catherine Kitts had the last scoring
opportunity in regulation for either team, but sent her shot
sailing over the goal.
Warner Pacific owned the first overtime period, outshooting the
Pioneers 3-0, but were unable to sneak one past Delgado. The
Knights once again got things started, taking a crack on goal in
the opening minutes of the second overtime, but were met by stiff
competition from Delgado, who once again collected the shot.
The Pioneers tried their hand at a quick counter attack, which
resulted in the lone L&C corner kick of the game. Despite their
best efforts the Pioneers were unable to take advantage of their
set piece. Freshman Katrina Weisbecker had the Pios final shot at
goal, placing one on target in the 105th minute, to no avail.
The Pioneers return to action on Monday, Sept. 7, when they host
Northwest Christian at 3 p.m. at Griswold Stadium in the team's
home opener.
