THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Paced by a game-high 23
points from freshman Kristina Williams, the Lewis & Clark
women's basketball team seemed poised to collect its third
straight road victory in four days on Sunday night, but it was the
California Lutheran Regals who collected the 68-67 victory in a
non-conference game at Gilbert Arena in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
The Pioneers (6-2) came out of the gates strong, posting a nine
point lead in the first six minutes of action following a Williams
layup. The Regals were able to fight their way back into the half,
capturing the lead with 7:02 to play in the period on a Brianna
Parker jumper. The lead change did little to rattle the battle
tested Pioneers, who quickly went on an 11-0 run within a four
minute span. A jumper by freshman Sara Villanueva in the last five
seconds sent the Pios into the locker room with a 35-25
advantage.
In the second half, the Pioneers continued to lay it on the Regals,
jumping to an 11 point advantage with a good three-pointer from
Williams with 17:16 on the clock. The Pioneers kept Cal Lutheran at
a safe distance for the 13 minutes, until the Regals began mounting
their comeback. The Regals began slowly chipping away at the Pio
lead, shaving it down to just two points with 27 seconds remaining
in the game. A last second three-pointer by Erica Whitley sealed
the Pioneers fate, with the Regals pulling out the 68-67 win.
The Pioneers received 23 points from Williams, shooting 12-for-14
from the charity stripe. Sophomore Margaret Dowling pulled down a
game-high 16 rebounds, 13 of which came on the defensive side of
the ball. Senior Talerra Rich chipped in 14 points, while sophomore
Neva Hauser had 11.
The Regals were led by 21 points from Parker and 12 from
Whitley.
The Pioneers return to action on Monday, Dec. 21 when they head to
Portland State University for a 7:05 tipoff.
