PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark
women's basketball team took the Portland State Vikings by
surprise in the opening half of Monday night's game at the
Scott Center, keeping the Vikings within 11 points. The Division I
Vikings went onto run away from the Pioneers in the second half to
pick up the 70-44 victory.
The Pioneer defense gave Portland State a run for their money in
the first half, trimming the Viking lead to 14-11 on a
three-pointer by sophomore Margaret Dowling with 10:22 on the
clock. During that period of time, the Pioneers were able to keep
the Vikings off balance, only allowing them to make five of 13. The
Vikings offense kicked things into gear moments later after a made
three from Kelly Merchant, closing out on a nine-of-19 from heading
into the half for a 37-26 advantage.
The Vikings were able to carry their momentum over into the second
half, scoring the first nine points of the half, while keeping
Pioneer offense from finding their rhythm.
Freshman Sara Villanueva led the Pioneers in points with 10, while
classmate Kristina Williams added nine points. Williams also
contributed eight rebounds and three steals. Dowling finished with
a game-high nine boards.
Kelli Valentine led the Vikings with a game-high 15 points, while
Claire Faucher and Eryn Jones each had 11.
The Pioneers do not return to the court until 2010, when they host
Whitman College in their Northwest Conference opener on Jan. 2 at 1
p.m. in the Pamplin Sports Complex.
