PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman Kristina Williams
played like a veteran as the Lewis & Clark women's
basketball team defeated The Evergreen State, 57-55, in a
non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon at the Pamplin Sports
Complex in Portland, Ore.
The Geoducks took the lead early in the game, running up a 12-point
advantage with 6:02 on the clock. The Pioneers were able to pull
the game back into single-digits at the 3:43 mark when Neva Hauser
hit a jumper to cut the Geoduck lead to 24-18. The advantage
switched to the Pioneers with 42 seconds left in the half with two
made free throws from Christina Herring to give the Pios a 26-25
lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Pioneers picked up where they ended the
first half, running out to a 38-27 lead with 13:57 to play in the
game. The Geoducks continued to battle the Pioneers for every ball,
eventually working their way back into the game, cutting the score
to 54-53 on a Katie Garcin layup with 3:26 on the clock. Williams
gave the Pioneers a 56-53 lead just seconds after the Garcin layup,
but the L&C cushion would be short lived after Garcin buried a
jumper with 1:18 to play. However, two turnovers in the final
minute of the game cost the Geoducks the game and allowed the
Pioneers to pull out the 57-55 win.
The Pioneers were led by a game-high 20 points from Williams, who
also seven rebounds in the win. Herring finished with 10 points,
while Spence added nine.
The Geoducks were led by 13 points from Latrina Woods and 12 from
Brittany Weaver. The Pioneers ended with nine steals, compared to
the Geoducks four.
Lewis & Clark returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 17 when they
take on Warner Pacific at 7 p.m. at the Pamplin Sports Complex.
