PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's
soccer team honored senior defender Liska Havel prior to the start
of its Northwest Conference match against the visiting Bruins of
George Fox. Havel has been a key member of the Pioneers for the
last four years, playing in 71 games over her career. Despite the
ceremonious occasion the Pioneers were unable to pick up a victory,
falling 1-0.
The Pioneers fall to 3-10-5 on the season and 2-10-2 in conference
play, while the Bruins improve to 7-11 overall and 4-10 in the
NWC.
Statistically the game was evenly matched with the Bruins having a
slim 11-10 advantage in shots, while the Pioneers had a 6-3
advantage in corner kicks.
The first half began with both teams running each other up and down
the field trying to get their offenses going. The Bruins managed
nine shots in the first half, but were only able to put one of them
away in the 32nd minute of action. The goal came from a deflection
in the Pioneer box that found the foot of Jenny McKinsey who netted
the ball for the 1-0 lead.
Lewis & Clark did its best to shut down the Bruin offense in
the second half, holding them to just two shots in the period. The
Pioneers had a couple good looks in the second half, nearly
converting one in the 76th minute on a breakaway from freshman
Katrina Weisbecker. The Bruin defense was able to catch up with
Weisbecker at the end of the play, deflecting the ball out of
bounds. That would be as close as the Pioneers would come to
getting the equalizer.
Freshman goalkeeper Elise Delgado made four saves, while Bruin
goalkeeper Becka Doyle was not forced to make a save.
The Pioneers close out their season on the road beginning with
Whitman on Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. followed by a contest with Whitworh on
Nov. 7.
