PORTLAND, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's
soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Whitworth Pirates in
overtime on Friday afternoon in Northwest Conference action. The
Pioneers fall to 2-5-4 on the season and 1-5-1 in the NWC, while
Whitworth improves to 10-2 overall and 7-1 in conference.
Junior forward Katie Browning got things going for the Pioneers in
the first half, scoring her team-leading third goal of the season
in the 26th minute, putting the Pioneers up 1-0. The play started
with a good shot from freshman Katie Cabuling that forced the
Whitworth keeper to come up with a save. The Pirate goalkeeper was
unable to handle the Cabuling shot, allowing it to rebound back
into the box. Browning found herself at the right place to slot it
into the near post, past the diving Pirate goalkeeper.
Despite heading into the half down a goal the Pirates remained
focused and it eventually paid off with a goal in the 52nd minute.
The goal came on a free kick from 15-yards out from Kelly Lunde.
After a quick step over from a teammate, Lunde calmly charged the
ball and beat the Pioneer goalkeeper right.
The two sides continued to battle through the remainder of
regulation, but neither side was able to put the game away. The
Pirates were able to find the answer four minutes into the sudden
death over-time period with a second goal from Lunde. Lunde was
able to beat both of her defenders to fire off a low shot that
found its way past the charging Pio keeper. The Pio defense tried
to clear the ball out of the box, but instead it rolled into the
back of the net.
The Pirates outshot the Pioneers 24-5, while also having a 9-2
advantage in corner kicks.
Pioneer goalkeeper Elise Delgado came up with nine saves.
Lewis & Clark returns to the field on Sunday, Oct. 11 at noon
when they host Whitman College.
