PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman goalkeeper Elise
Delgado made seven saves to keep the Lewis & Clark
women's soccer team in the game against the Pacific Boxers on
Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers and Boxers battled through two
overtime periods with neither side finding the back of the net to
end the game at a 0-0 draw. With the tie the Pioneers improve to
2-4-4 overall and 1-4-1 in Northwest Conference action, while the
Boxers fall to 4-4-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in conference.
The Boxers had numerous scoring chances throughout the match as
the team collected 25 shots and 12 corner kicks. Despite the
scorning opportunities the Boxers were unable to sneak one by
Delgado. Pacific's best scoring chance came in the 29th
minute, when Ashley Kanda fired a shot from 10-yards out that beat
Delgado high. The Pioneers goalkeeper received help on the play
from the cross bar, as Kanda's shot pinged off the bar and
fell in front of Delgado.
Pacific continued to have the run of play in the first half as
both teams headed into halftime tied 0-0. The Pioneers adjusted to
Pacific's plan of attack in the second half, shifting the
momentum their way for the opening 20 minutes.
The Boxers regrouped half way through the second half regaining
the run of play and almost scoring in the 82nd minute of
action.
The Pioneers best scoring chance came in the 17th minute when
Gillian Sullivan-Bing tried to sneak one past Brittany Hartmann.
Sullivan-Bing's shot forced the Boxer keeper to dive for the
ball, but was unable to get by her.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. when
they host Whitworth in a NWC conference matchup.
