NEWBERG, Ore. - The Lewis & Clark women's soccer team
dropped a 1-0 decision to cross-town and Northwest Conference rival
George Fox on Saturday afternoon on the road. The Bruins goal came
in the first half of action and proved to be enough to clinch
the victory. The Pioneers fall to 2-4-3 on the season and 1-4 in
conference play, while the Bruins improve to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in
NWC play.
"The statistics are not telling to the type of game this was," said
Head Coach Steve Golas. "Our girls put together a beautiful game of
soccer and we showed a lot of promise. We still have a lot of
building to do, but overall it was a good performance, that again
the stats do not reflect."
Despite the how the stats read, the game proved to be a tightly
contested battle, with the Pioneers putting their best efforts
forward despite missing several players due to injury. The Bruins
outshot the Pioneers 35-5, while only managing to sneak one goal
past freshman goalkeeper Elise Delgado.
Delgado had a spectacular game for the Pioneers, punching away
several Bruin shots and making big plays when they were needed.
Delgado played the whole match for the Pioneers, coming up with 14
saves on the night, while allowing one goal.
Freshman Harper Kaufman received her first start of the season,
leading the Pioneers in shots with two, while placing one of them
on goal. Jenny McKinsey led the Bruins in shots taken, firing off
an astounding 18 shots, while only managing to place half of them
on frame.
The Bruins lone goal came in the 36th minute of action on a shot by
Kaitlyn Peer. The play began with a cross from McKinsey who crossed
the ball to a teammate who sent it back into the middle where it
rattled around a bit before Peer sent it in.
The Pioneers almost upstaged the Bruins in the 33rd minute of
action when freshman Lexi Bolton put one on frame that just missed
its chance to find the back netting. The play began with a
beautiful build up from freshman Katie Cabuling to classmate
Katrina Weisbecker who was able to find Bolton making a huge run
down the left sideline. Bolton received the ball with about
five-yards of space in-between her and the goalkeeper. Bolton
unleashed a shot that forced the Bruin keeper to come up with a
diving save in order to keeper her team from falling behind a
goal.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 4 at noon, when they
play host to Pacific in another NWC matchup.
