PORTLAND, Ore. - Freshman midfielder Gina
Watkins' second half goal held up as the Lewis & Clark
women's soccer team beat the Whitman Missionaries, 1-0, in a
Northwest Conference match-up on Sunday afternoon at Griswold
Stadium.
The Pioneers improve to 3-5-4 on the season and 2-5-1 in
conference, while Whitman falls to 3-7-1 overall and 2-6 in the
NWC.
Watkins notched the game-winner, her third goal of the season, in
the 68th minutes on a nice pass off junior Katie Browning's
head. Freshman Katrina Weisbecker started the play, taking the ball
to the end-line and swinging it into the penalty area. Her cross
found Browning who headed the ball toward the near post. Watkins
then redirected the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net.
The goal is the first one that the Pioneers have scored outside of
the first half all season. The two sides both fired off seven shots
in the game, while the Pioneers edged the Missionaries in corners
3-2.
Freshman goalkeeper Elise Delgado picked up her seventh shutout of
the season, while only being forced to make one save. Courtney
Porter made three saves for the Missionaries.
The Pioneers return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 17 when they
head to Linfield for a NWC contest. The game is slated to begin at
12 p.m. The Wildcats defeated the Pioneers earlier this season on
the Pios turf, 2-1.
