Soccer Scoreless Streak Snapped

The Pioneer soccer team's impressive streak of scoreless minutes was snapped with 1:10 remaining in double overtime of Sunday's 1-0 loss to the Pacific Boxers (box score). It was the first goal allowed and the first loss of the season for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers and Boxers played a very even game with the Boxers taking 20 shots and the Pioneers 15. The Boxers goalkeeper, Erin Ichimura had five saves. The Pioneers Kate MacDougall (freshman, Danville, Calif.) had seven saves.

The two teams played a scoreless game through the first overtime and seemed destined to end in the fourth deadlock of the season for the Pioneers when L&C was whistled for a foul while playing defense five yards outside their own goalbox. The Boxers took the foul kick, with the ball deflecting off the players in front of the goal. Pacific's Jenny Novak headed the ball and it sailed over the Pioneer goalkeeper into the net for the game winner.

The goal was the first of the season allowed by the Pioneers, snapping a streak of 613 scoreless minutes to start the season. They also fall from the ranks of teams to not allow a goal this season, though they have yet to allow one in regulation.

With the victory, the Boxers improve to 2-0 in the NWC and 3-3 overall. The Pioneers fall to 1-1 NWC and 2-1-3 overall.

The Pioneers play at Willamette Wednesday night, September 24 at 7pm in Salem, Oregonl.
