The Pioneer soccer team opened the NWC portion of their season
with a 2-0 (box
score) victory over the George Fox Bruins Friday night at
Griswold Stadium. Brittany Larson and Aly Robinson each had goals
for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers and the Bruins entered the game as two of only nine
teams in all of Division III to not have allowed a goal this
season. The Bruins shutout streak ended at 429 minutes when midway
through the second half the Pioneers' Aly Robinson (sophomore,
Cumberland, Maine) took a shot from twenty yards out that sailed
over the Bruins' goalkeeper into the upper right corner of the net.
The Pioneers added a bonus goal nine minutes later when Brittany
Larson (senior, Boulder, Colo.) connected on a feed from Rebecca
Conroy (senior, Napa, Calif.). Bruin goalkeeper Sally Page
initially stopped the shot, but Page got tied up with Larson in
trying to make the save outside the goal and fell down, leaving
Larson a clear shot at the goal for the Pioneer insurance.
The Pioneers' goalkeeper Kate MacDougall (freshman, Danville,
Calif.) earned her fifth shutout of the season. The Pioneers have
yet to allow a goal in 504 minutes of play this season.
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 4-1-0 on the season and 0-1-0
in the NWC. The Pioneers improve to 2-0-3.
The Pioneers are back in action Sunday afternoon at 12 noon at
Griswold Stadium when they host the Pacific Boxers.
