Women's Basketball Finishes Homestand With a Win

The Pioneer women's basketball team avenged an early-season loss to Pacific by earning a 65-45 (box score) victory over the Boxers Tuesday night at the Pamplin Sports Center. Allison Farr scored 15 points to lead the Pioneers. Crystal Castle had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Pacific took an 8-6 lead early in the game on a three-pointer by Amy Pedersen. The Pioneers tied the game on a layup by Allison Farr (senior, Lakeport, Calif.), then turned a steal by Kim Kittell (sophomore, Tillamook, Ore.) into a lead, 10-8, on a jumper by Sara Kettler (senior, Dana Point, Calif.) with 14:46 left in the first half. They would never trail again in the game. Assisted by 16 points scored by the Pioneers bench, including 7 points from Christina Herring (freshman, San Dimas, Calif.)  the Pioneers outscored the Boxers 28-12 through the rest of the first half to take a 38-20 lead into the half.

In the second half, Pacific trimmed the lead to 14, 43-29, on another three by Pedersen, but the Pioneers answered with a 9-0 run to push the lead back out to 23. They cruised to a 65-45 victory.

For Pacific, Amy Pedersen had a game-high 16 points, including hitting four three-pointers. She also had eight rebounds. Mallory Goldammer scored 11 points with three steals.

For the Pioneers, Allison Farr (senior, Lakeport, Calif.) scored in double-digits for the fifth straight game, putting up 15 points. Farr has scored in double-digits eight of her last nine games. Farr also had three blocks in the game, moving her into second place on the Pioneer career list for blocks with 104. The school record is 112 in a career, held by Amy Woodward (1991-94).

Crystal Castle (senior, Rocklin, Calif.) had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, going 5-5 from the field. It was the second time this season Castle has had a double-double against the Boxers. It was also the sixth for Castle this season and the 15th of her career. Castle also had five assists and two steals. Kim Kittell improved her Conference-leading assist-to-turnover ratio with four assists and zero turnovers. She also had six points, three rebounds, and three steals.

With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 9-9, 5-4 in the Northwest Conference, remaining in third place in the NWC. The Boxers fall to 2-15, 1-8 NWC.

The Pioneers next play Saturday night in Tacoma when they will face Pacific Lutheran at 6pm. Live play-by-play for the game will be available on the internet through sportsjuice.com.
