The Pioneer women's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime (boxscore) to the
George Fox Bruins Wednesday night at Griswold Stadium. Katie
Burnett scored the goal for the Pioneers.
In a very even contest, the Pioneers and Bruins split time of
possession in the first half, with neither team holding a clear
advantage until the Bruins Amber Stevens had a shot deflect off
Pioneer goalkeeper Nora Germano (senior, Los Altos, Calif.) and
just barely make it into the net to put the Bruins up 1-0 with
under four minutes remaining in the first half. The score remained
1-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Pioneers evened the game less than five
minutes into the period. After a George Fox defender was issued a
yellow card, the Pioneers' Katie Burnett (senior, Los Angeles,
Calif.) knocked the ensuing free kick into the back of the net from
thirty-yards out to make it a 1-1 contest.
Both teams had minor scoring chances throughout the remainder of
regulation, with Lewis & Clark amassing six shots in the second
period. The Pioneers' Stephanie Thurin (junior, Park City, Utah),
had the two best scoring chances of the half, with both of her
kicks sailing over the goal. George Fox just had one shot in the
period.
With the game tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, George Fox had
an excellent scoring opportunity in the first overtime with Amber
Stevens getting off a great shot that just hit the crossbar to save
the Pioneers from the sudden death loss.
Amber Stevens found another opportunity 43 seconds into the
second overtime when she went one-on-one with a Pioneer defender
for thirty yards down the right side of the field, taking her shot
and connecting with the right front corner of the net to end the
game.
With the victory, the Bruins improve to 6-2-0 (4-1-0 NWC). The
Pioneers fall to 1-5-1 (1-4-0 NWC).
The Pioneers finish off their week with a Saturday match in
Salem against the Willamette Bearcats. The action begins at 12
noon.
