The Pioneer soccer team ended their season with a 4-3
heartbreaking overtime loss to the Whitman Missionaries. Sophie
Trick scored a goal with two seconds left in regulation to send the
game into OT.
The Missionaries scored the first goal of the game, taking a 1-0
lead twelve minutes into the game when Jennifer Doane took a soft
shot that was well positioned just out of the reach of Pioneer
goaltender Karyne Sander (senior, Grants Pass, Ore.) on a pass from
Kristen Berndt. Corina Gabbert added another goal for the
Missionaries five minutes later. The kick from Gabbert looked like
a harmless cross, but it managed to roll into the corner of the net
for the point. A minute later, the Pioneers' Katie Burnett (senior,
Los Angeles, Calif.) took a shot after a foul, with the shot
deflecting off the crossbar of the goal. Aly Robinson (freshman,
Cumberland, Maine) was there to take the rebound and kick it into
the net. With just under fifteen minute remaining in the
first half, Whitman took a 3-1 lead on a high kick into the back of
the net by Kristen Brendt off a pass from Jennifer Doane.
Lisa Housman (senior, Beverly Hills, Calif.) got the Pioneers
back into the game with a breakaway goal midway through the second
period (the 64 minute mark of the game), making it a 3-2 game, a
score which looked like it would hold up for a Whitman victory. As
the announcer counted down the final ten seconds of regulation, the
Pioneers moved into offensive overdrive with Nicole Greenberg
(senior, Santa Monica, Califf.) booting the ball from midfield to
right in front of the net, setting up Sophie Trick (freshman,
Arlington, Va.) who reflexively kicked the ball into the net with
two seconds remaining in the game to send it to overtime.
Whitman, however, prevailed in the extra frame. Two minutes into
the first overtime period, Jennifer Doane took a shot on goal that
deflected off the cross bar. The Missionaries Kristen Brendt was
right there to take the rebound and kick it into the goal for the
game winner.
The Pioneers finish their season with a 2-15-2, 2-14-1
Conference mark. The Missionaries improve to 10-6-3, 9-4-2 NW.
Whitman finishes off their season tomorrow afternoon, hosting rival
Whitworth.
