Baum and Fung Post Program Records To Lead Men's Track & Field

Men's track & field posted 11 top-10 marks in program history across two meets

NEWBERG/PORTLAND, Ore.—Senior Andrew Baum and junior Harrison Fung both posted program records, to lead Lewis & Clark men's cross country this weekend at the George Fox Indoor #1 and Portland Indoor #2 Meets.Ā

HOW IT HAPPENEDĀ

The River Otters racked up 11 top-10 marks in program history and earned seven top-five finishes - as part of a strong weekend across the board.Ā

George Fox Indoor #1 Meet (Saturday)Ā 
Ā 
Baum led Lewis & Clark's short sprinters and field event core that headed to Newberg. He posted the program record in the weight throw and added a top-five showing in the shot put.Ā 
Ā 
Baum, who was competing in the indoor weight throw for the first time, notched a mark of 14.89M (48-10.25 Feet) to set the program record. He finished third out of 20 throwers in the event. Junior Liam Stanley took 16thin the event and notched the second-furthest mark in program history with a heave of 10.99M (36-00.75 Feet).Ā

Baum also led three Lewis & Clark throwers in the shot put. He posted the second-best throw in school history in the event with a throw of 13.60M (44.07.50 Feet). Baum took fourth out of 21 throwers overall. First year Ewan Reid made his collegiate track & field debut and finished in 16th place. He recorded a mark of 10.20M (33-05.75 Feet) to move into sixth in program history. Stanley added a top-10 mark of his own, as he launched the shot put 9.71M (31-10.25 Feet) to move into ninth in program history.Ā

Senior Jon Fritz added a pair of third-place finishes. In the long jump, Fritz placed third out of nine leapers with a mark of 6.53M (21-05.25 Feet). Sophomore Kris Adams finished in eighth overall when he posted a PR of 6.08M (19-11.50M).Ā

Fritz also took third overall in the 60M Hurdles. He posted a time of 8.95 in the preliminaries.Ā

Sophomore Jaden Mwendapole led a quartet of River Otters in the 60M. He finished sixth out of 52 runners in the prelims with a PR time of 7.18. First year Enzo Murray took 17thĀ overall with a time of 7.40. First year Duncan O'Kelly (7.61) and senior Zaren Crockett (7.86) placed 28thĀ and 43rd.Ā

In the finals of the 60M, Mwendapole moved up to fourth overall and second among collegiate runners with a PR time of 7.14.Ā

Portland Indoor #2 Meet (Sunday)Ā

Fung set the program record in the 600M and Lewis & Clark placed a runner in the top three in all three events they competed in.Ā 
Fung ran the 600M for the first time in his career and broke the program record by over three seconds. The junior who was making his season debut, posted a time of 1:24.74 to finish third overall. Senior Jordan Lahusky took sixth overall and improved upon his PR time with a mark of 1:27.95 (second in program history). Junior Jordan Wu moved into a tie for fourth in program history when he crossed the line in 1:32.74. Junior Teagon Aasen finished just behind Wu with a season-best time of 1:35.42.Ā

Junior Evan Markelz placed second out of 22 runners in the mile. Markelz came across in 4:17.47 to finish just 0.26 seconds behind the winner from NCAA DI University of Portland. Junior Emil Miller posted a PR time of 4:30.42 to come in sixth overall. Senior Joseph Naylor (4:42.06) and junior John Blockhus (5:04.06) finished in 15thĀ and 20thĀ overall.Ā

Junior Quinn Higgins posted the third-fastest time in program history in the 800. He placed second in his heat and third out of 15 total runners with a PR mark of 2:01.38. Junior Colin Shimabukuro came in sixth overall and moved into sixth in program history with a PR mark of 2:02.98. First year Knox Orchard added a top-10 mark of his own, as he crossed the line in 2:03.11 to finish seventh and move into seventh all-time. Sophomore AJ Gibbs took 10thĀ overall with a time of 2:03.40.Ā

BY THE NUMBERSĀ 
  • Baum's PR throw in the shot put (13.60M) was the best throw by a Lewis & Clark student-athlete in the event since 1963 when Gary Boggs posted a heave of 15.54M.Ā 
  • Markelz (4:17.47) just missed out on tying his career-best time in the Indoor Mile of 4:17.44. He stands third all-time in the event in program history.Ā 
  • Mwendapole moved into third-place in program history in the 60M with his Finals time of 7.14.Ā 
  • Fung's time in the 600M broke Lahusky's old program record in the 600M by 3.21 seconds. The pair both broke the program record on Sunday and sit first and second all-time in the event.Ā Ā 
WHO'S NEXTĀ 
Ā 
Lewis & Clark will travel to Spokane next weekend for the Whitworth Indoor Invitational on February 13-14. The meet will serve as the team's final regular-season indoor meet this year.Ā
