Volleyball Opens 2025 Season in Santa Cruz, Hosts Early Invitational

Pioneers to play 11 home matches, face Schreiner for third consecutive year

PORTLAND, Ore. — Lewis & Clark College women's volleyball has unveiled its 2025 schedule, which includes 23 regular-season matches, 11 contests at Pamplin Sports Center, and a full slate of Northwest Conference action. The fall also features the return of the Lewis & Clark Invitational Tournament and a trip south to open the season.

The Pioneers begin their campaign with four matches at the UC Santa Cruz Tournament in Santa Cruz, California. Lewis & Clark opens play on Friday, Aug. 29, with a 1 p.m. match against the University of Redlands before taking on tournament host UC Santa Cruz that evening. The team wraps up the tournament the following day with matches against Occidental College and a second meeting with the Banana Slugs.

The Pioneers have limited history with their tournament opponents. They last faced Redlands in 2015 at the same event and played Occidental most recently at the 2023 Pacific Coast Classic. Lewis & Clark and UC Santa Cruz have squared off five times, most recently in 2022.

The home opener is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 5, when the Pios host Schreiner University at 7 p.m. to kick off the Lewis & Clark Invitational. The tournament continues the next day with a doubleheader against Macalester College (4 p.m.) and Colorado College (6:30 p.m.). Schreiner returns to Palatine Hill for the second time in three seasons, marking the third straight year the two teams will meet. Lewis & Clark faced Macalester last fall in the Scots' home tournament, while their lone previous matchup with Colorado College came at the Tigers' season-opening tournament in 2016.

Northwest Conference play begins with a tough road trip to Tacoma, Washington, on Sept. 19–20 to take on Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound. Both teams finished tied for second in the NWC standings last year at 13-3, with PLU knocking off the Loggers in the conference tournament semifinals.

Following another road contest at Pacific University on Sept. 26, the Pioneers return home for a stretch of key conference matchups. Lewis & Clark hosts George Fox on Sept. 27, then welcomes defending NWC champion Whitworth University on Oct. 3 and Whitman College on Oct. 4. Whitworth went 16-0 in conference play last season, finishing 26-3 overall and appearing in the AVCA Division III Top 25 for six weeks, peaking at No. 19.

The Pios' October homestand continues with Linfield University (Oct. 10), Puget Sound (Oct. 17), and PLU (Oct. 18). The team's final home match of the month is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, against Pacific.

Lewis & Clark wraps up the regular season with a Halloween road trip to Whitman, followed by a Nov. 1 matchup at Whitworth. The Pioneers close out the year at home on Friday, Nov. 7, against Willamette University. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the 7 p.m. first serve. The season concludes with a trip to Linfield on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The Pioneers return nine players from last year's roster, including seniors Reilyn Sabado and Abby Warrick. Juniors Ruby Kuerschner, Isabel Meleán-Williams and Christi San Diego are also back, after playing in 20 or more matches in 2024. Kuerschner led the team in assists for a second-straight year and she became the seventh player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists (1,014 career) on Senior Day last season. Melean-Williams and San Diego are the Pioneers top returning hitters and San Diego finished second on the team last season with 27 total blocks.
