Softball Sweeps Pacific Lutheran Thanks To Pair Of Walk-Offs

Abby Yamashita delivered a big two-run double in game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore.—Sophomore Maggie O'Leary threw her second-straight shutout in game one and senior Sam Gildersleeve delivered a walk-off RBI double in the eighth inning of game two to help Softball sweep Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
Lewis & Clark 8, Pacific Lutheran 0 (6 Innings)
Lewis & Clark 3, Pacific Lutheran 2 (8 Innings)
(Lewis & Clark 18-8, Northwest Conference 12-2)
(PLU 10-16, NWC 5-9)

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Pioneers scored in five of the six innings in game one and then Charlize Pope threw eighth innings in game two and kept the Lutes at bay long enough for Gildersleeve to provide her second walk-off of the day.

O'Leary and Pope combined to allow just seven hits, three walks and two runs over 14 innings. The sophomore pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

GAME ONE RECAP

O'Leary scattered four hits and two walks over six innings and the Pioneers provided her plenty offense to help Lewis & Clark move to 5-0 in home conference games.

The sophomore pitcher struck out eight batters, her second-most of the season, to move to 8-4.

Sophomore Gina Ozuna went 3-4 with two runs scored, an RBI and a pair of doubles. Freshman Harper Campanella added two hits, a run scored, two RBI and a double of her own. Sophomore Madison Scroggins chipped in a hit and two runs scored.

Lewis & Clark jumped all over Pacific Lutheran's two pitchers.

In the first inning, Ozuna singled, Scroggins was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. With one out and Scroggins on third and Gildersleeve on second (reached on a fielder's choice), Campanella made it 1-0 on an RBI groundout. Senior Mari Alvarez followed with a hard-hit single through the right side to make it 2-0.

The Pioneers tacked on a third run in the second. O'Leary led off with a walk, took second on a sac bunt and and raced home on a two-out Lutes error. Lewis & Clark made it 4-0 in the third when O'Leary lifted a sac fly to shallow right to score Campanella from third.

The hosts pushed their advantage to 6-0 in the fourth. Katie Ingersoll led off with an infield single and raced home on an Ozuna double. Campanella made it 6-0 with a two-out RBI double to plate Ozuna.

After their first scoreless inning of the game in the fifth, the Pioneers reached the eight-run mercy-rule in the fifth. Ozuna started the rally with a one-out double and Scroggins followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Ozuna scored on a passed ball and Scroggins raced all the way to third on the play. Gildersleeve provided her first walk-off of the day with a sac fly to center to score Scroggins.

On the opposite side, Pacific Lutheran put runners in scoring position four times but only had a runner reach third twice. They had their best chance to score in the sixth. Paola Garcia tripled with one out and Molly House followed with a walk. O'Leary got out of the jam with a fly out to right.

GAME TWO RECAP

Game two was a pitcher's duel between Pope and Lutes starter Rachel Treves. Both pitchers limited the opposing offense to just two runs through seven innings, before the Pioneers finally came through on Gildersleeve's big hit.

Pope threw a career-high eight innings pitched and tied her season-high with five punchouts. She scattered three hits, one walk and two runs scored.

Offensively, Gildersleeve was the lone Pioneer with multiple hits. The senior went 2-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Abby Yamashita added a huge two-run double and Emily Patton, Scroggins and Alvarez all tacked on a hit and run scored.

The Pioneers took their first lead of the contest in the second. With one down, Alvarez reached on an error by the left fielder and Patton followed with a walk. Both runners raced home when Yamashita roped a double to make it 2-0.

Pacific Lutheran responded in the next half inning. With one out, Syan Yamamoto worked a walk and Casey Wright followed with a two-run homer to tie the game.

Pope and Treves would take over from there with neither pitcher running into serious trouble over the next four innings.

Pope retired the visitors in order in the eighth to set up the Pioneers for another win.

It only took two pitches for the Pioneers to win in the bottom of the eighth. Scroggins opened the frame with a line drive single up the middle over the pitcher's head. Gildersleeve followed by crushing the first pitch she saw to the base of the wall in center. Scroggins was forced to wait for the ball to land, before taking off for third. The ball bounced away from the center fielder and Scroggins was sent home and barely slid underneath the tag at home plate. It was only after a brief delay from the home plate umpire - before he signaled Scroggins was safe and the Pioneers began to celebrate a second walk-off win of the day.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pioneers 12 wins (12-2) in conference play are their second-most in program history in a single-season. The 2021 team went 13-11 to set the program record. That 2021 team is also the only team in program history to have earned a spot in the Northwest Conference Tournament.
  • O'Leary tossed her second-consecutive shutout on Saturday. She has not allowed a run in her last four appearances and has thrown 15.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
  • Lewis & Clark earned their first two walk-off wins of the season on Saturday. The Pioneers game two contest was their first extra-inning game of the year.
  • The Pioneers 18 wins are their third-most in program history. This year's team only trails the 1990 team (22-13-1) and last year's team (19-19).
WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will look to earn their fourth-straight NWC series victory to start the conference season on Sunday. The Pioneers will host the Lutes for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. and need one win to tie the program record for conference wins in a single-season (13).
