Loggers Spoil Volleyball's NWC Home Opener

Piper McCoy-Harmon posted a career-high 7 kills in the match

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore.—Despite a career-high seven kills from sophomore Piper McCoy Harmon, Lewis & Clark College volleyball suffered a 3-0 setback to defending Northwest Conference Champions University of Puget Sound on Saturday night in their NWC Home Opener. 
 
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The Pioneers hung tight with the Loggers in the first set (25-19) and used a late rally in set two to pull within 24-19 before Puget Sound took the set 25-19. Puget Sound jumped out to an early 9-3 edge in the third set and never looked back to take the set (25-14) and the match. 
 
Senior Izzy Willis led the Pioneers with nine kills on 30 swings. She also added the team's lone solo block of the evening. 
 
McCoy Harmon more than doubled her season-total in kills during a career night. The sophomore put up seven kills on 16 swings. 
 
Junior Annika Traxler tacked on six kills and was one of three Pioneers with double-digit digs (12). 
 
Freshman setter Ruby Kuerschner led the team with 22 assists and posted her fourth double-double of the year with 10 digs. 
 
Senior libero Katie Shimaura led Lewis & Clark with 13 digs and was one of four Pioneers to record an ace in the contest. 
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Junior Bethany Ballesteros served a team-high 15 times and helped the Pioneers go on several sustained runs while she was at the service line. 
  • Prior to Saturday, McCoy Harmon's collegiate-high for kills in a match was two (four times). 
  • Freshman HB Schuett made their collegiate conference debut. Schuett played in two of the three sets and posted a block assist. Fellow freshman Isabel Melean-Williams made her second NWC appearance and first since the conference opener at Whitman College. 
  • Shimaura in now just two digs away from ninth place in program history (837 for her career).

Lewis & Clark will travel to Willamette University on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for a midweek conference matchup.
