Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore.—Lewis & Clark softball raced out to an 8-1 lead and held on for an 8-7 game two victory, to snap Whitworth University's 13-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon at the Huston Sports Complex.

Lily Moffitt and Riley Anderson each had big bases-clearing hits and Alyssa Abe earned her career-high 10th win of the season in Saturday's second contest.

KEY MOMENTS GAME ONE: WHITWORTH 18-3 (5 INNINGS)

Whitworth scored nine runs in the top of the first inning to cruise to an 18-3 game one victory.

Freshman Katie Ingersoll posted her first collegiate multi-hit game by going 2-2 with two runs scored.

Alyssa Hoeke added two hits in three at-bats and an RBI. Freshman Pippi Jepsen recorded her first collegiate hit and also added a run scored.

In the circle, Kylie Hill came on in relief in the first and allowed nine hits and six earned runs over five innings. She struck out a season-high three batters during her outing.

Lewis & Clark broke up the Pirates shutout bid in the third. Ingersoll legged out a double into the right-center field gap and raced home on a two-out Hoeke RBI single up the middle.

The Pioneers tacked on two final runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jensen started the inning with her first collegiate hit and Ingersoll followed with a single to right. Both runners advanced 60 feet when the right fielder's throw airmailed second base. On the next pitch, the ball skipped past the catcher and both runners took off. The catcher overthrew the pitcher trying to get Jensen and Ingersoll came all the way in from second to make it 18-3.

KEY MOMENTS GAME TWO: LEWIS & CLARK 8-7

Lewis & Clark exploded for eight runs and Abe pitched her way out of trouble, to help the Pioneers snap the Pirates 13-game conference winning streak.

Abe allowed nine hits and seven runs but also struck out seven in the win. Despite being victimized by five home runs, Abe did a great job of resetting herself and minimizing the damage, including keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard in the seventh. She helped herself out offensively by going 3-3 with a run scored.

Anderson went 2-3 with two runs, two RBI and her ninth home run of the season. Moffit added two hits and two RBI and fellow senior Braylin Jenson recorded two hits, one run and one RBI. Ingersoll worked three walks and scored twice in the win.

After Whitworth took the lead on a solo home run in the top of the second, Lewis & Clark struck for four runs in the second and third.

Anderson started the rally in the second with a single. Abe followed with a single of her own and both players moved up on a wild pitch. Jenson tied the game with a single through the left side. With the bases loaded and two outs, Moffitt rocketed a single to center that skipped past the center fielder and scored all three runners.

In the third, Olivia Brackin doubled to left-center and was able to walk home when Anderson blasted a home run well past the center field fence. Abe followed with a single and Ingersoll walked to put two on with two outs. Hoeke made the Pirates pay when her single up the middle scored both runners.

Whitworth scored six unanswered runs between the fifth and sixth innings. In both frames, the Pirates hit a two-run home run and a solo shot both with one out. Abe settled in both times and recorded a strikeout and a pop up to end the innings.

In the seventh, Whitworth put the leadoff batter on an error and the go-ahead run with a bunt single. The Pirates put down a sac bunt to push both runners up. Abe then struck out Whitworth's top power-hitter and induced a weak pop up to second to close out the win.

DEEPER LOOK

  • Ingersoll reached in all five of her trips to the plate. She came in with one career hit and three walks. She ended the day 2-2 with three walks.
  • Abe's 10th win of the season is a new career-high. She is one win shy of Jauna Williams' 2002 season when she won 11 games. No Pioneers pitcher has won 11 games in a single-season since Williams.
  • Hoeke came into the day with four RBI on the season and went 3-6 with three RBI.
  • Brackin was forced to play shortstop for all 12 innings on Saturday. It's the first time the Pioneers first baseman has played shortstop this season.

WHO'S NEXT

Lewis & Clark will look to take the series from Whitworth on Sunday. The two sides are scheduled to meet at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for the final two games of the NWC series.
