Abe Hurls Complete Game Shutout To Lead Pioneers To Split At Puget Sound

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash.—Lewis & Clark College softball's three pitchers combined to allow no earned runs over 14 innings and freshman Riley Anderson hit a pair of home runs, in a doubleheader split with host University of Puget Sound.

Junior Alyssa Abe threw her second collegiate shutout in game one and Anderson hit a home run in both games, including a two-run, game-tying homer with two outs in the top of the seventh of game two.

"We showed a lot of grit and fight today, but ultimately just didn't have enough quality at-bats to pull off two wins," head coach Shawna Cyrus said. "Our pitchers were so clutch and got us out of so many jams."

GAME ONE KEY MOMENTS: 4-0 LEWIS & CLARK

Abe was fantastic in the opener, limiting the Loggers to just two singles and a double in the Pioneers first shutout win of the season. The junior allowed just three baserunners all game long, faced two over the minimum and struck out five batters.

Samantha Gildersleeve and Anderson each hit solo home runs and Lily Moffitt went 3-4 with a run scored to provide more than enough offense for Abe.

In the top of the first, Moffitt singled with one out and moved to second on a Mari Alvarez single. Both runners went in motion and Moffitt came all the way in to score to make it 1-0.

In the second inning, Anderson hit her second collegiate home run and second in three games-with a leadoff shot.

Puget Sound had one of their few chances to score in the third. After a leadoff single and stolen base, Abe struck out the next batter and the Pioneers turned two to end the frame.

Lewis & Clark tacked on insurance runs in the sixth and seventh. Gildersleeve made it 3-0 with a solo homer in the sixth and Lopez drove in Braylin Jenson with an RBI single in the seventh.

GAME TWO KEY MOMENTS: PUGET SOUND 3-2

With the Pioneers down to their final out, Anderson crushed a game-tying, two-run homer to extend the game to the bottom of the seventh. Puget Sound had an answer though, as three of the first four batters reached, to lift the Loggers to a walk-off victory and a split of day one.

The Pioneers pitching trio of Cassidy Crusberg, Kylie Hill and Abe combined to limit the hosts to 10 hits, one walk and three unearned runs. Crusberg went 4.1 innings and scattered seven hits and two unearned runs.

Offensively, Anderson put together a 2-3 showing with a run scored and two RBI. As a team, the Pioneers were limited to just four hits in the loss.

Puget Sound scratched across an unearned run in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 edge.

The Pioneers pitchers did a great job keeping it to two runs through six innings, as they stranded nine Loggers in the contest.

After recording two hits and no walks in the first six innings against Puget Sound's Savanna Smith, Lewis & Clark had four runners reach base in the seventh.

Alvarez led off the inning with a walk and tried to come all the way home on a Gildersleeve double but was thrown out at home. After a strikeout put the Pioneers down to their final out, Anderson blasted a two-run homer to tie the game. Jules Henderson kept the inning going with a walk but Smith got out of the jam with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the inning, the leadoff hitter reached on an error and came in to score on a Jessica Moore one-out, walk-off single.
