Pios win in rally, split season-opening doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Samantha Gildersleeve blasted a game-tying, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, and Mari Alvarez hit the walk-off single in the eighth, as the Lewis & Clark Pioneers beat the Warner Pacific Knights, 10-9, in Saturday's season opener.

The Knights scored five in the first inning on the way to a 10-2 win in the finale.

Lewis & Clark scored five runs over the final two innings in game one. Gildersleeve had four RBI, and Olivia Brackin, Cassidy Crusberg and Alyssa Abe added doubles.

Game 1 | Key Moments

Down four in the seventh, Mia Lopez opened the inning with a pinch-hit single. With one out, Alvarez singled before Riley Anderson singled in the first run of the frame. After another out, Gildersleeve turned and sent a three-run home run, her first of the year, to the left field foul pole and tied the game.

In the eighth, Abe led off with a double. Following a Kalea Kaui's walk and Kami Merrill's pop up, which advanced Abe to third, Alvarez sent the game-winner to right field.

Alvarez finished 3 for 3 with three RBI including a sacrifice fly in the second and an RBI single in the fifth. Kauai scored two runs and drew a walk.

Crusberg pitched seven innings and threw 120 pitches. She allowed eight earned runs on three walks, 16 hits and two strikeouts. The Pios also completed two double plays.

Game 2 | Key Moments

A five-run first inning helped Warner Pacific pull away in the finale. Gildersleeve hit an RBI single, and Abe added one of her own to give the Pios their only two runs of the game during the bottom half of the first.

Looking to keep the game going, the Pios earned a lead-off walk by Jade Valdez to begin the fifth. After back-to-back outs, Abe singled and got to second to give the Pios runners at second and third, but they were stranded. Lewis & Clark also left two in the second after Katie Ingersoll and Alvarez walked.
