Pioneers earn one-hit, shutout victory in game two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A complete game, one-hit effort from Alyssa Abe helped the Lewis & Clark Pioneers win 8-0 in five innings over the Bushnell Beacons in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader at Huston Sports Complex.

It was a near perfect outing for Abe who retired 14 straight batters. She struck out four and allowed one hit in the win, her first of the season.

Braylin Jenson, Lily Moffitt and Abe had multi-RBI games. In the finale of each doubleheader so far this season, Jenson has had five and three RBI respectively.

Key Moments

To start the game, Krystal Akagi hit a leadoff single and Noel Baldersto reached on an error. They were the only two runners to reach base the rest of the game against Abe. The sophomore pitcher retired 14 straight batters the rest of the way.

"I really think it's the defense," Abe said. "It really helped me out there, especially my catcher (Lindsey Flegel). She knows exactly what I'm throwing, framing the ball, which helps me get those strikeouts. Overall, I was super pumped and just excited."

Abe helped her cause offensively, too. Her RBI double opened Lewis & Clark's scoring in the bottom of the second, and Jenson added a two-RBI single down the right field line.

The Pioneers (2-2) added five more runs in the fourth. Like they did in the first and third innings, the Pios started the fourth with a free base when Kalea Kaui drew a leadoff walk. Following a Beacons error, Jenson singled to score Kaui. Two more walks scored another run before Moffitt doubled off newly-entered pitcher Stella Turner for two more. Abe added a groundout RBI.

Game 1

Three solo home runs accounted for all but one of the Lewis & Clark Pioneers runs in a 6-4 loss to the Bushnell Beacons in the opener on Saturday.

Two leadoff homers by Olivia Brackin in the fourth and Sydney Cross in the sixth gave the Pios their first two runs. Jules Henderson added a pinch-hit homer later in the sixth.

Bushnell stranded just one runner in the first three innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Key Moments

Lewis & Clark stranded four runners in the first four innings, while the Beacons cashed in early baserunners. Anna Cardwell and Anabel Mendez had RBI hits in the first, and Jordan Kuykendall and Kerry Murphy added another pair in the third. Pioneers starter Jane Wilson allowed six runs on 10 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Six of her hits allowed came in the first four innings.

Cross' homer is her third this season, while Brackin hit her first of the year after smacking 10 in her debut season back in 2019. Meanwhile, Henderson's was her first in a Pios uniform and came in her third at-bat of the season.

"I'm just so happy that I get to get back on the field again," Cross said. "The team is just crushing the ball, and it's just been so fun."

"It felt amazing, coming in cold like that for my team," Henderson said. "I knew I had to get the ball in play and just get my team fired up."

After the three consecutive home runs cut Bushnell's lead to 4-3 entering the seventh, Cardwell and Alexa Berry hit RBI singles to give the Beacons a cushion. Lewis & Clark picked up one run when Brackin reached on an error and Kai Pinera crossed the plate. Pinera and Alyssa Hoeke had led off the inning with back-to-back singles.

Deeper Look

  • Abe's one-hit performance is the first by a Pioneers pitcher since Madison Hollenbeck gave up one in a 1-0 win over Pacific Lutheran in Feb. 2013
  • With two hits in Saturday's finale, Abe had her first career multi-hit game
  • Hitting .500 through four games this season, Jenson is among the Northwest Conference leaders in batting average
    • As of the publishing of this recap, Jenson is tied with two others in the NWC for average with the second-most at-bats (14) and Cross is tied for the lead in home runs
  • This is the first time since at least 2013 that the Pioneers have had multiple games with at least three home runs
  • Lewis & Clark drew 10 walks in Saturday's doubleheader, seven in the last game, and rank second among NWC teams in walks draw so far this season
  • Prior to earning two in Saturday's finale, Cross had never been walked more than once in a game; she has walked at least once in every game this season
  • The Pios defense had some standout moments including an unassisted double play by Moffitt in game one and two sprinting foul ball catches by Cross
  • Miranda Jensen earned the win in the first game for the Beacons (nine hits, four runs, three walks and two strikeouts)
  • Cardwell and Kuykendall had multiple hits in the opener for Bushnell

Looking Ahead

Lewis & Clark completes the non-conference schedule with a pair of games at Willamette on Mar. 13. While that series will not be counted in the NWC standings, the four-game series in Portland on Apr. 3-4 against the Bearcats will.
