Lewis & Clark debuts in NWC doubleheader defeat

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERG, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers allowed two home runs in the final inning to lose 8-7 in their second game of Saturday's doubleheader to the George Fox Bruins at Morse Athletic Field.

Home runs by Aaliyah Kautz and Mikaelie Sullivan in back-to-back at-bats lifted the Bruins from a 7-6 deficit entering the final inning.

For the first time in her Pioneers career, Braylin Jenson had three RBI. Lewis & Clark scored five unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings before George Fox won in the seventh.

Key Moments

The Pioneers took a 2-0 lead on Jenson's two-RBI double in the second inning.

George Fox (6-2, 2-0 NWC) roared back with six straight runs in the bottom of the second and forced Pios starter Savannah Dickson out of the game. She finished with six runs on five hits over 1 1/3 innings. Megan Anderson pitched the rest of the game and only allowed runs on the two homers in the seventh to take the loss.

To lead off the fourth, a passed ball allowed Kalea Kaui to reach and Jenson scored her with an RBI single. Lisa Kumasaka and Kai Pinera followed with scoring singles of their own before Kumasaka crossed when Pinera stole second. The four-run, five-hit inning tied the game.

Megan Richardson picked up her second career RBI when she scored Kaui for the go-ahead run in the fifth. Kaui had a double to start the inning.

The Pios had one batter reach - Lily Moffitt on an error - in the final two innings.

Game 1

In Saturday's opener, the Lewis & Clark Pioneers fell 5-2 to the George Fox Bruins.

Alyssa Abe pitched a complete game, the first of her career, and allowed just one run passed the second inning. Olivia Brackin and Frankie Warden each hit a double.

Roni Braun had two RBI, and Ashley Davis improved to 3-1 with a complete-game pitching effort for the Bruins.

Key Moments

The Pioneers (0-4, 0-2 NWC) had one reach base in the first three innings, and George Fox built a 4-0 lead.

With Pinera on base after she was hit by a pitch, Warden hit a double to left center for the Pios first run. Jordyn Vierra, who pinch ran for Warden, was left at third. The Pios stranded two in the fifth after a two-out walk by Jenson and Kumasaka's single.

Trailing by three, Lewis & Clark had six come to the plate in the seventh. A leadoff single by Kaui and a walk by Jane Wilson gave the Pios two on with no outs. Richardson lined out, and Kaui was thrown out during Jenson's at bat. With two outs, Kumasaka singled in Urbach, who pinch ran for Wilson. The game ended on Pinera's strikeout.

Deeper Look

  • Kumasaka went 4 for 7 in the leadoff spot along with a walk and two RBI
  • Pinera's two hits in the second game were the first of her career, while Urbach had multiple hits in a game for the first time since last March
  • In addition to her career high, the three-RBI performance from Jenson was just her second time with more than one in a game
  • Warden reached base three times (1 hit, 2 walks) in the finale
  • Lewis & Clark committed three errors in the last game
  • Moffitt played at third base as the Pioneers were without Sydney Cross, who was injured last week in practice
  • Sierra Gundersen at second base started and had her first hit of the season

Looking Ahead

The series wraps up with a doubleheader on Sunday that starts at 11 a.m.
