Johnson goes for 19 in road defeat

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Delsie Johnson led the Lewis & Clark Pioneers with 19 points and eight rebounds in Sunday's 85-48 loss at the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens. Johnson shot 6 of 12 and brought in four offensive boards at Voelkel Gymnasium. 

A stretch of over eight minutes without a field goal in the first half hindered Lewis & Clark early. Pomona-Pitzer built a 34-17 lead by the end of the sequence when Johnson scored a layup with 4:45 left in the second quarter.

Emily Church led the Sagehens with 16 points off the bench. Pomona-Pitzer outscored the Pios 39-19 in the second half.

Key Moments

Peyton Romo's 3-pointer three minutes into the game gave the Pioneers their largest lead of the game, 11-8. Laurel Marchant, who finished with five points, and Johnson had two field goals apiece in the early moments of the game. Lewis & Clark shot 40 percent in the first quarter, but finished 35 percent from the floor for the game. 

Meanwhile, Pomona-Pitzer totaled 49 percent from the floor and made 10 of 20 from deep, a season high in both 3-pointers made and percentage. Lewis & Clark had 19 turnovers and was outscored 23-7 off turnovers. The Sagehens gave the ball up just five times.

Hannah Martin had seven of her eight points in the fourth quarter after an 0 for 7 start from the field. She added four rebounds and a team-high four assists. Starting in her second straight game, the first two of her career, Coco Shafer scored four in the third period and finished with six.
