Battling fouls, Crawford tallies a double-double in loss to Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers were within a single possession for the early part of the second half before the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens pulled away in Saturday's 92-72 defeat. Playing their second game of the David Wells Classic at Roberts Pavilion, the Pioneers were led by 21 points and 10 rebounds from Zeke Crawford.

Micah Elan had a career-high 33 points in the win for the Sagehens. Pomona-Pitzer, which received votes in the latest men's basketball top-25 poll, outscored Lewis & Clark 39-16 through the heart of the second half. 

Freshman Brenden Patrick added a career-high 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting for the Pios.

Key Moments

A 9-0 run by the Pioneers in less than a minute nearly gave Lewis & Clark the lead with six minutes left in the first half. Patrick followed Crawford's 3-pointer with two of his own and brought the Pios back from a 10-point deficit. 

Lewis & Clark outshot Pomona-Pitzer for the game, 51 percent to 47 percent, and both teams hit six 3-pointers. The Sagehens took 27 free throws and made 24, while the Pios went 4 of 9 from the line. With a 12-5 margin in offensive rebounds, Pomona-Pitzer led 15-4 in second-chance points.

The Pioneers (1-4) never led, but didn't go away early. Christian Pitcher, who entered the game third on the team, hit two free throws to bring the Pios to within one, 42-41, in the first minute of the second half. Matt Brown's layup three minutes later kept the Pios within one possession before Pomona-Pitzer made its run.

Patrick hit one of his seven field goals with 13:33 remaining in the second half as the Pioneers closed to within four.

Looking Ahead

Lewis & Clark's next game is Wednesday against Portland Bible at 7 p.m. The Pios host two home games to bookend the Northwest Conference opener at Willamette on Dec. 4.
