Pirates Use Big Second-Half Run To Knock Off Men's Basketball

Junior Yigit Arcan led the River Otters with 13 points

PORTLAND, Ore.—Whitworth University used a 31-11 second-half run to grab control and they went on to defeat Lewis & Clark College men's basketball 82-62 on Saturday at Pamplin Gymnasium.

THE BASICS

Whitworth 82, Lewis & Clark 62
(Lewis & Clark 8-7, Northwest Conference 4-2)
(Whitworth 12-3, NWC 6-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a rematch of last year's Northwest Conference semifinals, the NWC league-leaders used a 48-20 advantage in points in the paint, to stay undefeated in league-play.

Junior Yigit Arcan posted a team-high 13 points to lead Lewis & Clark. Arcan finished 4-8 from the field and went 3-5 from deep. He tacked on three rebounds and one assist.

Sophomore Marcus Bast and junior Joe Brown added nine points apiece. Bast went 4-6 from the field and led the team with four assists. Brown chipped in seven rebounds and went 3-5 from beyond the 3-point line.

Seniors Taien Jackson, Justin White, Andre Treadwell and Kody Uyesugi all posted seven points. White led the team with eight rebounds and White and Uyesugi each notched two steals.

Whitworth's Colton Looney led all players with 27 points. Looney went 9-15 from the field, 4-7 from deep and hit all five of his free throw attempts. Caden Bateman (13 points, 10 rebounds), Kobe Parlin (13 points) and Ben Nyquist (10 points) joined Looney in double-figures.

Whitworth raced out to a 12-0 lead after 3:19. The Pirates scored on five of their first six possessions with all five starters scoring during the spurt.

Treadwell stopped the run with a contested jumper and Lewis & Clark slowly worked themselves back into the game. The River Otters went on a 11-5 run to get back within six (21-15). White, Arcan and Donovan Beard all drained 3-pointers during the run to bring the River Otters with two possessions with 9:56 to go in the half.

Whitworth would hold Lewis & Clark at bay for the rest of the half and took a 35-27 lead into the break.

Lewis & Clark started off the second half red-hot. Uyesugi, Bast and Treadwell each knocked down 3-pointers to key a 9-2 run to start the second half. Treadwell's three with 18:32 to play brought Lewis & Clark within one (37-36).

Whitworth responded with back-to-back baskets to push the lead to five, before Lewis & Clark cut the deficit to two points on three occasions. Brown (3-pointer), Bast and Uyesugi each hit baskets to keep the game within two points.

Whitworth opened up a seven-point lead (50-43) with 13:35 to play thanks to five-straight free throws. They used a second flurry to put the game away. The Pirates scored 14-straight points over a 4:18 span to extend their lead to 68-47 with 7:32 to play. The run coincided with an injury to Treadwell – which kept Lewis & Clark's top scorer out of the game for the final 16:38.
