Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. -- The first Northwest Conference game for the Lewis & Clark Pioneers ended in a 25-21, 21-25, 19-25, 17-25 loss to the George Fox Bruins on Friday night at Wheeler Sports Center.
The loss moves the Pioneers to 1-7 on the season and 0-1 in the NWC.
Each set started off the same with both teams going point-for-point. Lewis & Clark started the match with two short runs which led to two George Fox timeouts. Annika San Nicolas then had two service aces to put the Pioneers up 23-20. The set ended with a kill by Emma Contreras and a .429 hitting percentage by Kortney Meyer.
The next three sets had the same pattern for the Pioneers. The Pios were able to go point-for-point in the first half of each set. But the Bruins (2-2; 1-0 NWC) slowly pulled away. The Pios had nine service errors and 27 attack errors.
Casey Myszkowski had the Pioneers' team-high hitting percentage with .308. Meyer had a team-high 14 kills and combined with Contreras (12) and Myszkowski (5) for 31 kills total.
Contreras a team-high and season-high 19 digs. She along with San Nicolas (10), Meyer (9) and Mikayla Lopez (10) combined for 48 digs.
Lopez ended the match with team-high 30 assists while San Nicolas (2), Meyer (1) and Contreras (3) combined for six service aces.
The Pioneers had a .109 hitting percentage with 42 kills. They also had two more blocks than George Fox with a total of nine.
The Pioneers play at Linfield on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
