PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers won the first set before losing the next six on Friday in the team's opening games of the 2017 season at Pamplin Sports Center.

In the Pios first game of the Oregon Trail Classic, a pre-season tournament hosted by the four Oregon institutions in the Northwest Conference, Bailee Cragun landed three consecutive kills to even the opening set with the Augsburg Auggies at 25 apiece. Lewis & Clark ended up losing 28-30, 25-21, 25-10, 25-20.

The Pioneers played in the finale against No. 24 Gustavus Adolphus, 25-18, 25-13, 25-13.

Lewis & Clark has two matches on Saturday as the tournament shifts to Linfield.

Cragun finished the match with 10 kills, while Emma Contreras had the best hitting percentage from the attackers at .233 with nine kills. Contreras put down an ace and two kills to score points after both teams hit the 20s in the opening set. Kortney Meyer had a team-high 15 kills and 14 digs. Mikayla Lopez added 15 digs and 32 assists in the opening match, while Annika San Nicolas, who started at libero, had 14 digs.

Freshman Kayla Valdez made her first collegiate start and junior transfer Hannah Robles played in two sets. Senior Anneka Banda started for the first time with the Pioneers as well.

In the second match, the 24th-ranked Gusties hit a match-high .341 in the second set, led by 10 kills from Sam Haugen. In the match, Lewis & Clark freshman Makena Ohlmaier made her debut, finishing with three kills and 10 digs. Casey Myszkowski hit .364 with five kills, and Contreras had a team-high eight kills.

The Pioneers first match on Saturday is at 11:30 a.m. against Schreiner before a 4:30 p.m. pairing with Montana Western.
