NEWBERG, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers split Saturday's season finale doubleheader with the George Fox Bruins with a 10-3 victory in Sunday's season finale. With the win at Morse Athletic Fields, the Pioneers finished the season with seven victories in their final 10 games.
The Pioneers scored half of their runs in the third inning, with Jenai Rojo being hit by a pitch, and Frankie Warden hitting a double, putting the Pioneers in a position to begin the five-run inning. Lewis & Clark had three hits in the third and combined for 16 hits in the game. They were helped by four George Fox errors, two of which came in the third.
Warden led the Pioneers with three hits, and eight Pioneers chipped in RBIs, with Tiana Rosario and Zoe Juarez contributing two each.
The Bruins had six hits, while the Pioneers had one error. Tristan Cozo had two hits for George Fox, and Annie Veatch hit her second home run of the day. Abbie Bergerson (6-8) took a seven-inning loss for George Fox
Kalin Rooney got the win for Lewis & Clark, pitching a complete game in the senior's last start. She finished 5-8 on the season.
Game 1
The Pioneers were defeated 3-0 in Sunday's opener against the Bruins.
Lewis & Clark (10-22; 10-18 NWC) outhit the Bruins, 5-3, but never had a runner move past second base. Stephanie Garcia had two hits for Lewis & Clark, finishing the year with a team-leading .359 batting average. Lindsey Yearman stole her ninth base of the season, but the Pioneers couldn't get a run across the plate.
George Fox (19-15; 15-13 NWC) used home runs to win the game, with Roni Braun going deep in the fifth inning and Annie Veatch driving in herself and Kimi Ito in the bottom of the sixth.
Lewis & Clark starter Kaili Akimseu threw a complete game and had 11 strikeouts, but fell to 3-8 on the year. Bruins starter Madison Sorensen threw a complete-game shutout and improved to 12-6 on the year. While both defenses were errorless, Akimseu and the Pios had a string of success, retiring 14 consecutive Bruins at one point.
