Defense leads way early, but Pios drop both to Whitworth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Lewis & Clark Pioneers allowed one hit through the first seven innings before the Whitworth Pirates used two singles to score a run as the Pios lost 1-0 in the opening game of four at the Huston Sports Complex on Sunday.

Madi Perez and Allie Rude had singles as two of the first three Whitworth batters in the top of the eighth. After Kinsey McNaught walked to load the bases, Myranda Ramirez hit a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run.

Katelyn Duilio had a lengthy at-bat for the Pioneers with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, reaching on single. Lisa Kumasaka flied out to strand Duilio, the tying run, and end the game.

Kaili Akimseu (0-5) pitched 7 1/3 innings and allowed three hits with three strikeouts, but nine walks, in the loss. Kalin Rooney replaced Akimseu after McNaught's walk in the eighth and got the final two outs, including Ramriez's sacrifice fly.

While Lewis & Clark's defense was solid, Whitworth's was as well, allowing four hits total to the Pioneers. Lindsay Yearman went 2 for 3 and Tiana Rosario had one to go with Duilio's. Lewis & Clark left four baserunners and Whitworth kept 13 on without scoring.

The games were originally scheduled to be played in Spokane, Wash. with Whitworth hosting in late February, but snow postponed the games until this weekend. When Whitworth's field was still unplayable, the teams agreed to swap sites this season as well as next year.

Game 2

Lewis & Clark allowed eight runs in the first three innings in an 11-3 defeat to end Sunday's doubleheader.

Kalin Rooney (1-3) started the game for the Pioneers (1-11; 1-7 NWC) and left after two innings having given up five runs on six hits. She walked two without a strikeout. Savannah Dickson allowed three runs on three hits in an inning of work before Kaili Akimseu returned to throw the final four innings. Akimseu gave up one earned run and three runs total with seven hits allowed.

Down 5-0 in the bottom of the second, Ateisha Norton reached on an error before Jenai Rojo singled down the rightfield line. Tiana Rosario sacrifice bunted the pair into scoring position. Ariel Trinidad grounded out to score Norton followed by Rooney's RBI single, which brought the Pioneers within three runs.

Lindsay Yearman, who had two hits for a second-straight game, drove in Lisa Kumasaka in the fifth inning for Lewis & Clark's only other run.

Kinsey McNaught went 3 for 4 to lead the Pirates (14-4; 5-1 NWC), who had six players finish with multi-hit games. Ashley Trueblood (3-1) pitched the whole game without a strikeout or a walk to earn the win.

The final two games of the series begin at noon on Monday at Huston Sports Complex.
